Data Scientist (Hybrid)
We are not looking for generalists with IT backgrounds or credentials like Scrum or Agile. This role requires candidates to be located in the Maryland, Washington, DC, or Northern Virginia (DMV) area who are willing and able to work in a hybrid model. The incumbent will work part of the week from home and part of the week at a CareFirst location based on business needs.
About the Role
Identifies and solves business problems using numerical techniques, algorithms, and models in statistical modeling, machine learning, operations research, and data mining. Uses advanced analytical capabilities to support data science initiatives. Communicates across product teams and with customers, educating on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and statistical models. Acts as a liaison between analytics, business units, and other departments.
Responsibilities
- Mines and extracts data and applies algorithms to derive insights.
- Contributes to analytics, reporting, and data governance activities related to Member Identification/Stratification (ID/STRAT), Attribution/Program Assignment, Data Extracts/Sharing, Population Health Management, Predictive Modeling, and Program Evaluation.
- Supports AI implementations, partnerships with IT/Data Management teams, vendor support (e.g., Milliman MedInsights), and related functions.
- Explores data to understand its profile and limitations.
- Assists business units in innovating organizational performance.
- Explores data patterns using existing data science tools.
- Translates business priorities into data science deliverables.
- Reviews trends in the ML/AI/DS space and assists with integrating new designs into solutions and products.
- Guides and mentors less experienced staff, potentially leading a team of matrixed resources.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. In lieu of a degree, an additional 4 years of relevant work experience is required.
- 3 years of relevant work experience.
- Prior healthcare analytics experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience delivering work consistently and transparently to internal and external business partners.
Skills
- Ability to work independently without detailed guidance.
- Strong communication and documentation skills.
- Proficiency with a variety of data science tools and frameworks.
- Knowledge of model evaluation, tuning, performance, operationalization, and scalability of scientific techniques.
- Understanding of software engineering principles and practices.
- Proficiency in statistical modeling applications.
- Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple customer service demands from internal and external customers.
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Pay
Salary range: $88,560 – $175,890. The range considers factors such as scope, responsibilities, candidate experience, education/training, internal peer equity, and market conditions. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range.
