Job Summary

Data Scientist provides analytical and programming expertise to interpret complex data for research leaders at the Rocky Mountain Regional Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Responsibilities

  • Data Acquisition & Preparation
    • Collect, extract and organize data from multiple sources (databases, EHRs, external datasets).
    • Clean, preprocess, validate, and transform raw data for analysis, ensuring data quality and integrity.
  • Data Analysis & Modeling
    • Analyze data using advanced statistical, machine learning, and predictive modeling techniques.
    • Develop, implement, and optimize algorithms and models to solve business or research questions.
  • Visualization & Reporting
    • Design and build dashboards and visualizations to effectively communicate data insights.
    • Prepare clear, concise reports describing methodologies, analyses, and results for stakeholders.
    • Present findings and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaboration & Consulting
    • Collaborate with stakeholders, including clinicians, researchers, IT teams, to define objectives and data needs.
    • Consult on best practices, model selection, data interpretation, and ethical data use.
  • Software Development & Automation
    • Implement reproducible workflows using version control and documentation.
  • Continuous Learning & Innovation
    • Stay current with new tools, technologies, and methodologies in data science and analytics.
    • Evaluate, test, and implement emerging data solutions to improve research or business processes.
  • Compliance & Security
    • Ensure adherence to data privacy, security regulations, and institutional policies.
    • Document all analytic processes and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree required or bachelor’s degree and 2 years relevant experience required.

Required degree concentration: Computer Science, Biostatistics/Statistics, Epidemiology, or other scientific, health, medical or social sciences field with a concentration in Data Science.

Relevant experience is defined as: Experience in Data Science, Statistics, Epidemiology, or other scientific, health, medical or social sciences field where activities included gathering, analyzing and interpreting statistical data.

  • Ability to apply advanced statistical techniques and develop predictive models to support research objectives.
  • Strong skills in statistical and programming languages (e.g., Python, R, SQL), including writing, debugging, and optimizing code.
  • Knowledge of methods for acquiring, cleaning, processing, and organizing large and complex datasets.
  • Ability to design, implement, and evaluate machine learning algorithms for pattern recognition and prediction.
  • Skill in creating meaningful visualizations to communicate findings.
  • Knowledge of study design considerations (e.g., experimental, observational), power analysis, sampling, and bias reduction.
  • Ability to translate complex analytical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and effectively work within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Skill in identifying research questions, diagnosing data issues, and selecting appropriate analytic approaches.
