American Electric Power (AEP) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Data Scientist or Data Scientist Senior to join our Supply Forecasting team. This role focuses on developing advanced forecasting models, conducting economic and variance analysis, and delivering actionable insights to support strategic decision-making for generation and market simulation projections.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain industry-leading econometric and time-series models to support regulatory filings and corporate planning.
- Contribute to reports and analysis for regulatory filings, including base cases, fuel filings, capacity resource plans, and securitization filings.
- Assist in preparing unit dispatch and market variance analyses to measure performance and support corporate strategies.
- Conduct periodic studies and monitor industry trends relevant to AEP’s service territory to inform planning and strategic decision-making.
- Gather and manage data related to unit dispatch, fuel prices, power prices, and economic indicators for forecasting and analysis.
- Create and maintain database tables to support data storage, retrieval, and reporting needs.
- Develop clear, compelling reports and visualizations to communicate findings to business partners and senior management.
- Stay informed on industry trends, economic conditions, and regulatory developments affecting the AEP service territory.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand business needs and provide analytical support.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, data science, mathematics, operations research, statistics, computer science, or a related technical field is required.
- 2 years of relevant work experience (Data Scientist) or 5 years of relevant work experience (Data Scientist Senior). An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
Skills
- Coding: Experience with statistical software packages such as R, Python, and/or SAS.
- Forecasting Expertise: Experience with econometric modeling or time-series analysis.
- Visualization Tools: Proficiency with data visualization platforms such as Power BI or similar tools.
- Database Skills: Strong SQL skills and experience working with large relational databases. Experience with Plexos, Aurora, or Encompass software is a plus.
- Communication Skills: Ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
- Utility Industry Experience: Prior experience in the energy or utilities sector is a plus.

Pay
- Data Scientist: $87,000–$105,000
- Data Scientist Senior: $100,000–$120,000
