Data Science AI Engineer
About the role
The Data Scientist AI Engineer provides advanced data analytics, machine learning, and AI-driven solution engineering to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Information and Technology (OIT), Product Delivery Services (PDS), Benefits and Memorials (BAM), Memorial and Benefit Services (MBS) in delivering secure, reliable, and effective Information Technology (IT) solutions that support the Department’s mission.
Responsibilities include providing recommendations for data-driven AI/ML solutions; performing statistical analysis, anomaly detection, pattern recognition, and identification of outliers to support business improvement initiatives; developing predictive models to classify categorical variables and estimate continuous variables using advanced mathematical techniques; and integrating predictive models into dashboards, reports, analysis outputs, and business workflows.
Additional duties involve incorporating data analytics requirements into designs and data pipelines; delivering cross-cutting tools for data migration, aggregation, mining, and analytical integration; establishing data baselines, analyzing query patterns, and identifying opportunities to optimize database and pipeline performance. The role also includes recommending and developing BI solutions that support analytics, reporting, and legacy system decommissioning; detecting and resolving data quality issues; and performing impact analysis for errors and deficiencies.
Enable FinOps capabilities by creating, monitoring, and improving forecasting, planning, and reporting of cloud utilization for optimized cost and performance. Work with Product, Architecture, Data/Middleware, and DevSecOps teams to integrate AI/ML and analytics solutions across environments.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or IT-related field with 7-10 years of experience.
- Demonstrated experience with Oracle/SQL; relational/non-relational data; APIs; ETL/ELT; data models/dictionaries; migration architecture; reconciliation.
- Experience performing statistical analysis, anomaly detection, predictive modeling, and data mining.
- Experience building analytic/data pipelines (ETL/ELT), data baselines, and scalable data processing systems.
- Experience developing BI solutions, dashboards, and data-driven decision-support models.
- Experience supporting data governance, quality analysis, and compliance requirements.
- Experience integrating AI/ML models into enterprise applications, reporting platforms, or operational workflows.
- Ability to create clear visualizations, reports, dashboards, and storytelling-driven analytic outputs.
- Understanding of data governance, privacy, data stewardship, retention requirements, and authoritative data practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Data Scientist (DASCA, Open Group, or equivalent).
- AWS Machine Learning Specialty or Azure AI Engineer Associate certification.
- Certifications in BI or analytics tools (Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, AWS QuickSight).
