Data Engineering Manager
About the role
The Manager, Data Engineering oversees the design, development, and maintenance of robust, scalable, and high-performance data systems that support business intelligence, analytics, and data science initiatives. This includes building and maintaining scalable data pipelines, championing data quality and governance standards, and enabling self-service analytics and advanced data science capabilities. The role partners closely with stakeholders across technology, product, analytics, and business teams to ensure data is a trusted and strategic asset, and helps define the roadmap, architecture, and tools that support current and future data needs—driving operational excellence and innovation at scale.
Responsibilities
- Mentor and grow a team of data engineers, ensuring high performance, engagement, and career development.
- Oversee the development and optimization of data pipelines, ELT processes, and data integration systems from various sources.
- Ensure high availability and performance of data systems.
- Optimize cost and performance of data infrastructure.
- Ensure the reliability, performance, and scalability of data infrastructure in cloud or hybrid environments.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Data Science, Analytics, Product, and Engineering to support data needs and project goals.
- Define and enforce best practices for data modeling, warehousing, governance, security, and quality.
- Set technical direction and standards for data architecture and engineering practices.
- Drive best practices in documentation.
- Champion automation and CI/CD.
- Implement monitoring, observability, and data quality frameworks.
- Own the architecture, scalability, and reliability of the company’s data platform.
- Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Manage technical projects from concept through implementation, including planning, prioritization, and delivery.
- Drive hiring, performance management, and career development.
- Foster a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Monitor team performance and ensure adherence to timelines, budgets, and organizational goals.
- Evaluate and recommend new tools, technologies, and architectures to improve data infrastructure.
- Participate in strategic planning and roadmap development for the Data Engineering function.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Scope
- Ensures work is aligned with the Director’s expectations, goals, and vision.
- Accountable for implementation of policies, processes, and procedures for short-term results.
- Decisions and problem-solving are guided by policies, procedures, and business plans; receives guidance from Senior Manager/Director.
- Works on difficult to moderately complex issues and projects.
- Provides guidance and training to subordinates.
- Has authority to hire, recommend pay, establish performance, and recommend for termination.
- Level of signing authority established by company policy/guidelines.
Requirements
- 8+ years of work experience in data engineering.
- 5+ years of successful leadership experience through managing projects or teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field required. Master’s degree preferred. Equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
- People management experience.
Skills
- Strong proficiency in SQL and programming languages such as Python or Java.
- Experience with modern data platforms such as Snowflake.
- Expertise in building and optimizing data pipelines and architectures (batch and streaming).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and related data services.
- Deep understanding of data warehousing concepts, dimensional modeling, and schema design.
- Experience with DevOps and CI/CD practices in a data engineering context.
- Proficient MS Office skills – Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent leadership skills; able to envision, develop, direct, manage, delegate responsibility and authority, and motivate an organization.
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written; strong marketing/business acumen.
- Demonstrates consultative leadership at the individual or team level.
- Capable of communicating with people at all levels of organizations (internal/external).
- Ability to communicate and inspire a team through accountability, delegation, and recognition.
- Ability to apply good judgment, decision-making skills, and strong work ethics and integrity on the job.
