About The Role The Senior Data Engineer at Visa plays a critical role within a dynamic, cross-disciplinary agile team. This position involves contributing to the product backlog, delivering key features to enhance data presentation for both customers and engineering teams, and driving process improvements. The role requires technical leadership, mentorship, and a strong commitment to coding excellence, testing, and documentation. As part of the team, you will collaborate with intermediate and senior engineers, agile team members, and external consultants, demonstrating excellent communication skills and a willingness to work across disciplines. Proficiency in emerging technologies such as Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot) is essential to support innovative work processes and solutions. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree with 8+ years of relevant work experience, or an Advanced Degree (e.g., Master’s, MBA, JD, MD) with at least 5 years of experience, or PhD with 2+ years of work experience.Expert-level experience with Spark framework, Hive-based technologies, and broader Big Data development tools and platforms.Minimum of 5+ years hands-on programming experience in Java, Scala, or Python, capable of developing clean, production-quality prototypes and core application components.Practical experience applying Generative AI and Large Language Models in data engineering, including leading initiatives that leverage GenAI to improve team productivity and operational efficiency.Strong working knowledge of SQL, NoSQL, graph databases, and RESTful APIs.Proven success leading large-scale, end-to-end projects that deliver measurable business impact from concept to production.Deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, and core computer science principles.Experience with data modeling for relational and non-relational databases.Experience collaborating with data scientists and machine learning teams, with knowledge of major ML paradigms and tools.Hands-on experience designing and managing reliable data pipelines using tools like Apache Airflow.Proficiency with version control systems such as Git, and experience implementing CI/CD pipelines for automated testing, deployment, and release management.Strong leadership qualities, including collaboration, quick learning, customer obsession, and mentorship capabilities.Experience in refining architecture plans, security assessments, and cross-functional team collaboration.Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and support data quality, governance, and compliance requirements. Responsibilities Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and incorporate feedback into product designs or solutions.Translate functional requirements into system architectures and communicate component interactions effectively.Design, develop, and refine product components, leading design reviews and architecture discussions.Participate in project estimation activities, considering delivery costs and escalating issues as necessary.Lead by example in creating extensible, maintainable, and reusable code, mentoring junior engineers along the way.Apply debugging tools to resolve moderately complex issues and identify automation opportunities.Conduct code reviews to ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices.Create comprehensive test plans, prioritize testing efforts, and interpret test results to inform development cycles.Proactively identify, contain, and document defects to minimize customer impact, sharing findings with relevant stakeholders.Contribute to process improvements, including automation and optimization of data pipelines and workflows.Support data quality, lineage, governance, and security initiatives to ensure compliance and reliability.Engage with cross-functional teams including data science and machine learning to enhance data solutions.
