Data Engineer II
About the role
The Data Engineer II supports the day-to-day operations of Grainger's data infrastructure, processes, and pipelines. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting and resolving operational issues, monitoring and supporting core technologies, tools, and data infrastructure components, performing root cause analysis, improving operational efficiency, and collaborating with engineering and analytics teams.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues to ensure platform stability and timely recovery
- Maintain and support core technologies, tools, and data infrastructure components
- Perform root cause analysis for production incidents; document findings and implement long-term, best-practice fixes
- Improve operational efficiency by building alerts, observability dashboards, automation, and reducing redundancies
- Partner with data engineering and platform teams to adopt new tools, frameworks, and patterns
- Work closely with users and stakeholders to address questions, provide support, and troubleshoot issues in a timely manner
- Stay current with industry trends and evaluate emerging technologies to enhance infrastructure and processes
Requirements
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in batch and streaming ETL using Spark, Python, Scala, Snowflake, or Databricks for data engineering or ML workloads
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience orchestrating and managing pipelines with workflow tools such as Databricks Workflows, Apache Airflow, or Luigi
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience designing, building, and optimizing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub and Jenkins
- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
- Familiarity with AWS or other cloud services (e.g., AWS Glue, Athena, Lambda, S3)
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform and Ansible
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently under pressure
Qualifications
- Experience in building observability and monitoring frameworks for data infrastructure
- Exposure to DevOps or DataOps practices
- Familiarity with BI tools such as Tableau, PowerBI
Skills
- Modern cloud data platforms (Snowflake or Databricks)

Pay
The anticipated base pay compensation range for this position is $95,000.00 – $158,400.00. This role is eligible for additional incentives targets based on the achievement of individual and company performance objectives in accordance with the current terms of the incentive program which are subject to change.
Schedule
The role is available for hybrid work, with the option to work from home or in the office.
