Data Center Preconstruction Director

About the Role

As a member of the Balfour Beatty National Data Center - Center of Excellence (CoE), you will provide company-wide leadership, technical expertise, and best-practice guidance to support successful data center delivery across all divisions. This role involves strategic leadership and day-to-day oversight of preconstruction services for mission-critical and data center projects, partnering with various teams to deliver best-in-class services from site evaluation through project turnover.

Responsibilities

• Preconstruction Leadership: Lead all phases of preconstruction, manage multiple projects, conduct constructability reviews, establish estimating standards, review drawings, lead subcontractor procurement, and provide executive-level reporting.
• Mission Critical & Data Center Leadership: Provide technical leadership for critical facility systems, participate in strategic planning, evaluate delivery strategies, assess emerging technologies, and support growth initiatives.
• Operations Services: Serve as the liaison between Preconstruction and Operations, support project execution plans, coordinate with various teams, assist with change management, and collaborate on supplier diversity goals.
• Business Development & Client Relationships: Participate in strategic pursuits, develop executive-level relationships, serve as a trusted advisor, and represent the company at industry events.
• Culture, Leadership & Employee Development: Lead and mentor preconstruction teams, establish departmental goals, foster a culture of safety and innovation, conduct performance reviews, and develop standardized tools and training programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 12-15 years of commercial construction experience, including 8-10 years in preconstruction for mission-critical or data center projects.
• Experience delivering hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, or other mission-critical facilities.
• Advanced knowledge of estimating, scheduling, procurement, construction operations, and data center delivery methodologies.
• Experience leading large teams and managing multiple concurrent projects.
• Proficiency with estimating software, BIM/VDC tools, scheduling platforms, and Microsoft Office.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Pay

$190,000 - $230,000

Location

This role is open to candidates within the Balfour Beatty Buildings operations footprint, with on-site locations in Seattle, WA; Portland, OR; Atlanta, GA; Falls Church, VA; or Dallas, TX.

Schedule

Primarily office-based with periodic travel (10%-30%) to project sites, client meetings, and industry events.
