About the role

Amazon seeks exceptional leaders for a strategic senior management position overseeing our data center operations. This executive role offers significant visibility within the organization and aligns with our mission of becoming the world's most customer-centric company. The leader will direct managers responsible for mission-critical data center infrastructure, manage network systems, server operations, and infrastructure maintenance, and ensure optimal availability and performance across multiple regional facilities.

The ideal candidate will possess comprehensive knowledge of both data center IT infrastructure and AWS cloud platforms, with a clear understanding of their integration and interoperability. Experience demonstrating practical applications of these technologies in hybrid environments is highly valued.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. This role supports a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles to deliver the highest standards for safety, security, and capacity at the lowest possible cost.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a team of Data Center Managers (3-9 areas and front-line managers) and 100-150 hourly associates within Regional Data Centers.
  • Attain organizational performance goals and objectives relating to safety, security, availability, scaling, and efficiency in support of data center operations.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures, including appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, resolving problems, and addressing staffing needs.
  • Strategic planning and forecasting for data center operations.
  • Obsess over team learning and development, both technical/functional and soft skills (critical thinking, emotional intelligence, adaptability), including mentoring and training.
  • Develop, improve, and share operational best practices across the globe.
  • Hire, manage, and develop the operations management team, including data center managers and operations technicians.
  • Plan and execute the Infrastructure Operations component of new AWS data center buildouts, expansions, and colocation projects, including network and server rack infrastructure.
  • Experience in successful insourcing and/or outsourcing specific tasks balancing internal skillsets with frugality.
  • Continuous improvement of operational processes, procedures, methods, and tools.
  • Support data centers in various operational stages, including facilities under development, which may require travel to established locations for training.

Requirements

  • Ability to travel to or commute between data center locations as needed, including temporary assignments at alternative sites during training or until the assigned facility is operational.
  • Willingness to travel (over 50 miles) or commute (less than 50 miles) to active data center sites as required by business needs.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience in technical work related to computer systems and technology components.
  • 7+ years of management experience in an operations, critical infrastructure, manufacturing, production, or distribution environment.
  • 3+ years of experience implementing LEAN/6 Sigma methodology (continuous improvement, DMAIC/DVADV, 5 Whys, Root Cause analysis, etc.).
  • 3+ years of experience working with network cabling, optic types, test equipment, and cabling infrastructure best practices within a data center environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Continuous Improvement and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Lean-Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
  • 7+ years of mission-critical facilities experience.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.
  • 7+ years of experience managing geographically dispersed teams.
  • Experience with safety, security, and availability of incident response, incident management, and incident resolution.

Pay

The base salary range for this position is $145,400 - $254,500 USD annually. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
