AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. This role is part of a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles working on challenging problems with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain.

About the role

The Data Center Facility Manager serves as a technical resource and leader within Amazon data centers, ensuring overall availability and reliability to meet or exceed defined service levels. This role is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all electrical, mechanical, and HVAC equipment, maintaining high reliability and performance while minimizing operating costs. The equipment supports mission-critical servers requiring better than 99.999% uptime.

Effective May 15, 2017, logical access to the AWS GovCloud region is restricted to Amazon employees who are U.S. Citizens. Relocation assistance is provided to eligible candidates. Amazon does not sponsor immigration, including H-1B, TN, and other non-immigrant visas, for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the data center's critical physical infrastructure.
  • Ensure high-quality work without impact to internal/external customers.
  • Manage teams of 24x7 engineering technicians in all facets of their career, including task prioritization, coaching, documentation, and training on best practices.
  • Engage in improvement projects from conception to completion, collaborating with various support teams.
  • Coordinate daily with third-party vendors to ensure adherence to contracted SLAs.
  • Effectively manage the operations budget and expenditures.
  • Serve as the after-hours on-call Data Center Facility Manager for regional data centers, responding to and managing issues.
  • Communicate complex technical information to diverse stakeholders, including non-technical audiences.
  • Act as an escalation point for facilities-related issues, overseeing routine and emergency services while ensuring safety procedures are followed.
  • Deliver operational excellence while prioritizing team development, well-being, and fostering a diverse and inclusive culture.
  • Perform physical tasks such as lifting and moving objects, walking job sites in different terrains, and working in noisy environments using approved PPE.
  • Support multiple locations/sites and provide on-site management for builders, five days a week (no remote work).
  • Maintain, operate, and troubleshoot mission-critical data center equipment, including:
    • Electrical support equipment: stand-by diesel generators, fuel systems, 3-phase electrical systems (switchgear, UPS units, PDUs, wet cell batteries).
    • Mechanical equipment: CRAC units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers/water chemical systems, air handlers, pumps, and motors.
    • Additional systems: fire suppression, building automation, and general facilities equipment.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience with Microsoft Office products and applications.
  • 5+ years of managerial/supervisory experience with 8-10 or more direct reports.
  • 3+ years of experience in industrial electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to work in environments requiring walking, stooping, bending, and climbing to access equipment.
  • Experience conducting behavioral interviews and hiring.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or equivalent, or 7+ years of experience in a data center or other mission-critical environment with an emphasis on building and equipment operation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of critical data center operations, including feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS units, PDU units, chillers, pumps, air handling units, and CRAC units.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for technical details.

Pay

Base salary range: $107,700.00 - $188,500.00 USD annually (USA, GA, Hampton). The package includes sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
