About The Role

The Principal Data Analyst will serve as a strategic analytical partner within Long Term Care Claims Operations, providing critical insights and data-driven recommendations to leadership. This role requires a high level of technical expertise in Power BI, SQL, and data storytelling, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive operational improvements. Operating with significant autonomy, the successful candidate will lead complex analytical projects, develop scalable dashboards, forecast trends, and support capacity and financial planning efforts. The ideal candidate will translate complex business questions into actionable insights, proactively identify performance drivers and risks, and present findings in a compelling manner that influences decision-making. Beyond reporting, this role emphasizes insight, influence, and impact—helping the organization optimize processes, improve customer experiences, and achieve strategic objectives. This role offers flexibility for remote work within specified time zones and locations, with a preferred hybrid/in-office setup in Richmond, Virginia.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Analytics, Data Science, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field
• 6+ years of progressive experience in data analytics or a related discipline
• Expertise in SQL, including query optimization, complex joins, CTEs, and performance tuning
• Advanced proficiency in Power BI, including data modeling, DAX, and dashboard storytelling
• Strong experience working with large, structured datasets using SQL, Excel, and Python
• Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and data storytelling skills
• Proven ability to present insights and recommendations confidently to senior leadership
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and influence cross-functional teams
• Strong understanding of data validation, quality assurance, and data governance best practices
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
• Nice to have: experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., Databricks), insurance or financial services industry background, experience with BI tools like TIBCO Spotfire or Business Objects, and familiarity with Pega systems
• Advanced analytics or modeling experience using Python and R (preferred but not required)

Responsibilities

• Act as a trusted analytical advisor supporting Long Term Care Claims, Customer Service, and Workforce Management teams by delivering actionable insights
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable Power BI solutions, ensuring adherence to enterprise standards and best practices
• Optimize data models, queries, and reports for performance and usability, ensuring dashboards are intuitive and well-documented
• Lead the development of complex SQL queries to extract, transform, and analyze large datasets for diagnostic and predictive insights
• Translate complex business questions into clear analytical approaches, metrics, and success measures
• Identify emerging trends, risks, and opportunities that impact operational efficiency, customer experience, and financial outcomes
• Present findings and strategic recommendations to senior and executive leadership with clarity and impact
• Validate, reconcile, and ensure data accuracy, completeness, and consistency across multiple sources
• Partner with data engineering and governance teams to resolve data issues and improve data quality standards
• Promote a culture of data literacy through coaching, knowledge sharing, and informal training
• Mentor junior analysts to foster analytical growth and maturity within the organization
• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to align analytics initiatives with business priorities
• Support the integration of new data sources and evolve reporting solutions as business needs change
