About the role
Provide support and encouragement to assist students in learning specific progressive or competitive programs such as Martial Arts, Gymnastics, Synchronized Swimming, Dance, Golf, Tennis, or Birthday Parties. Ensure safety and cleanliness of the program area and adherence to all YMCA safety standards and rules.
Responsibilities
- Conduct YMCA Sports Program instruction in accordance with YMCA program standards.
- Ensure adherence to YMCA progressive or competitive standards and quality.
- Provide a safe environment that allows members and participants to learn the YMCA sports curriculum.
- Encourage and support staff and students to provide an enjoyable YMCA experience.
- Reinforce the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility through example and recognition of participant displays of character.
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before scheduled class session to prepare equipment and be ready to begin at the scheduled start time.
- Be reliable and inform supervisor of any conflicts at least 24 hours before the work day.
- Ensure all participants have exited the facility and that it is left clean and orderly.
- Participate as part of the YMCA staff team in providing a safe and enjoyable environment.
- Provide excellent service to members and participants.
- Communicate all YMCA rules and ensure accessibility and identifiability.
- Manage participant behavior using a collaborative approach with supervision and parents.
- Complete timely reports of incidents, complaints, or compliments to the director/supervisor.
- Follow detailed schedules and lesson plans, demonstrating knowledge of specialized sport skills.
- Use approved positive support techniques to develop and refine participants' skills.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Some college or equivalent experience.
- 3-5 years of specialized sport experience.
- Ability to work with and be sensitive to others while portraying a positive coaching style.
- Ability to perform activities requiring sustained concentration and attention.
- Ability to physically assist (spot) program participants with a clear understanding of athlete development.
