Damage Prevention Specialist I

Essential Functions

  • Utilizes and maintains various company issued locate tools and equipment for proper use, storage, and upkeep.
  • Collects GPS pinpointed data to map locates of underground utilities, including electric power, gas, water cable TV, and sewer systems.
  • Locating and marking of natural gas pipelines.
  • Collects data of excavated utilities on a jobsite, including potholes and cross bores.
  • Interprets facilities to determine the presence of underground utilities.
  • Thoroughly maps underground utilities in a designated area, accurately updating collection maps of the location, completing necessary documentation, and effectively photographing each job site.
  • Completes all work in an organized, timely manner, within standard operating procedure.
  • Removes and replaces manhole lids.
  • Uses laptop computer or other electronic devices to receive and document status of excavation notices.
  • Communicates effectively with supervision, operational support, and clients.
  • Reports any issues in the field that may prevent accidents.
  • Performs project quality control.
  • Performs all duties assigned in a SAFE manner on private and public work areas.

  • Able to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions.
  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  • Able to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
  • Able to work well independently and as a part of a team with co-workers.
  • Able to pass motor vehicle, criminal background check, and comply with drug-free workplace policy.
  • English usage sufficient to keep records, place orders, and prepare simple narrative reports.
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional skills.

Experience And Education

  • Experience locating underground utilities a plus but not required.
  • SiteWise entry level basic locating training up to 45 days.
  • Entry level HIP technician including Screening locate request, Interpreting Prints, learning HIP process such as field audits and basic standbys.
  • Entry level introduced to special projects Pipe to Soil, Leak Survey, Atmospheric Corrosion, Line Marker Installs, etc.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-to-year basis.
  • Minimum 1-year tenure in described job roles before advancement.

Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications

  • Possession of a valid State of Residence Driver’s License is required.
  • Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
