Daily Substitute Teachers, St. John Vianney Regional School

About the role

Daily substitute teachers fill in for the classroom teacher (K–8th grade) in their temporary absence. The substitute follows the constructed lesson plans and daily activities while guiding students in the classroom setting.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a well-managed classroom and a safe, positive learning environment.
• Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground, and in the cafeteria.
• Follow and implement lesson plans, classwork, homework, and tests; attend parent–teacher conferences if needed.
• Provide appropriate materials and resources for student learning.
• Compile a report for the teacher covering student attendance, lesson-plan progress, disciplinary actions, and positive developments.
• Know and follow emergency evacuation routes, school procedures, and classroom regulations.
• Support the school’s culture of faith, continuous learning, quality, integrity, mutual respect, and Catholic values.
• Model expectations set forth in the school and diocesan handbooks.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Education or an education-related field.
• Teaching certification is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and supervise an educational program set by the classroom teacher.
• Effective communication with parents, students, and coworkers in a positive and enthusiastic manner.
• Understanding of child development and the skills to relate to students being taught.
• Ability to maintain high energy, respond calmly to overwhelming or difficult situations, and uphold confidentiality, credibility, integrity, and self-confidence.

Prior to interview: Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, NSOR, and FBI Criminal Background Fingerprint Check under Act 153 of 2014; attendance at a Protecting God’s Children class and Mandated Reporter Training.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear; frequent use of equipment including repetitive motions and computer eye fatigue.
• Possible biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
• Occasionally required to reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; lift and/or move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment; may occasionally climb stairs or ladders.
• Vocal communication and hearing at normal spoken-word levels; visual acuity for preparing and analyzing computer data, determining accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing surroundings.

Working Conditions

Normal classroom setting with working hours of 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; may be required to work outside normal hours for meetings, open houses, and workshops.
