Technical Supervisor, Laboratory Services provides leadership oversight to pre-analytical, specimen collection, specimen processing, and/or laboratory support areas. This role works alongside a team of experienced Cytotechnologists at UTMB’s Galveston, Clear Lake, and League City campuses, serving a diverse patient population across a large geographic region. As a teaching facility, the position involves interaction with residents, fellows, and professional staff, as well as participation in projects such as QA, statistical analysis, and educational presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, orient, train, supervise, evaluate, assess competency, coach, and discipline or terminate divisional employees.
  • Supervise daily and technical operations, including quality management activities for the division.
  • Oversee laboratory personnel performing routine and specialized technical procedures, including planning work, evaluating performance, and resolving procedural or technical problems.
  • Develop, review, and revise policies and procedures in accordance with departmental, hospital, and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate review and revision of the Laboratory Test Directory.
  • Ensure the laboratory division is staffed appropriately for efficient operation.
  • Review and evaluate the accuracy of lab data and report patient results with required documentation.
  • Work independently within established guidelines, apply problem-solving skills, and meet deadlines to address patient, provider, and system needs.
  • Assist personnel with complex procedures, exercising independent judgment and responsibility.
  • Oversee all Quality Management activities, including evaluating test results, quality control, equipment maintenance, proficiency testing, and corrective actions.
  • Participate in establishing and implementing quality assurance and continuous process improvement programs, including quality monitors, incident reports, and corrective actions.
  • Develop, evaluate, and implement new procedures, reagents, systems, and instruments for divisional use.
  • Prepare financial reports and collaborate closely with division leadership.
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for daily duties.
  • Ensure staff compliance with continuing education requirements and verify documentation for departmental records.
  • Communicate pertinent information to staff, management, medical directors, and other divisions.
  • Perform routine laboratory procedures/tests as needed.
  • Instruct and train students.
  • Cover different shifts if requested to guarantee patient care.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory accreditation standards.
  • Adhere to internal controls, reporting structures, and all safety protocols in laboratory areas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Basic Science with four (4) years of related experience in Cytology.
  • Previous leadership experience.
  • Must fulfill qualifications as a General Supervisor under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA).
  • Technologist-level certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI), or equivalent certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialty certification in Cytology issued by ASCP, AMT, or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience as a certified cytologist.
  • Regulation experience preferred.

Skills

  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills with the ability to provide multiple options for resolution.
  • Competent use of personal computers and general office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook).
  • Broad knowledge of Laboratory Services principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements per the College of American Pathologists.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while delivering high-quality work.
  • Ability to handle and safeguard confidential and sensitive information.
  • Leadership and management skills to direct and guide others appropriately.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
