About the Role
Serves as the school liaison officer (SLO) with responsibility for the oversight of all installation Child and Youth Services (CYS) issues involving public schools and their relationship to the local military community. Functions as an intermediary between and advocate for parents/youth and school administrators. Assesses needs and serves as the focal point for gathering and disseminating information concerning the local schools.
Works closely with the Youth Education Liaison Services (YELS) Specialist and other CYS staff to successfully integrate CYS initiatives and programs with school resources to meet the needs of constituents. Serves as a member of the Installation Child and Youth Evaluation Team to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and CYS baseline standards. Ensures the program contributes to achieving and maintaining DoD certification.
Serves as Subject Matter Expert on installation child and youth School Liaison Services (SLS). Prepares reports, surveys, and briefings for command and installation on matters pertaining to SLS. Procures supplies and equipment to support program goals and objectives.
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary liaison between military families, public schools, and CYS programs.
- Advocate for parents and youth in educational matters.
- Assess and address the needs of the local military-connected school community.
- Gather and disseminate information about local schools and educational resources.
- Collaborate with CYS staff to integrate programs and initiatives with school resources.
- Serve on the Installation Child and Youth Evaluation Team to ensure regulatory compliance and DoD certification.
- Prepare and present reports, surveys, and briefings on SLS-related matters.
- Procure necessary supplies and equipment to support program objectives.
- Travel to on- and off-post locations as required.
Requirements
- Direct Deposit and Social Security Card are required.
- A one-year probationary period may be required.
- Must satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-Verify) check.
- Subject to satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks, including a Child Care Tier 1 background investigation.
- Must successfully complete and maintain the Crime Control Act requirements.
- Successful completion of Foundation and Annual CYS Management Training is required.
- Must have a current health assessment documenting good mental and physical health, freedom from communicable disease, and immunizations in accordance with current Army and DoD policy, including annual influenza vaccinations.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs, walk, bend, stoop, and stand on a routine basis.
Qualifications
Resumes must clearly demonstrate the applicant's relevant experience, skills, knowledge, and abilities as they pertain to this position.
- Successful completion of a 4-year college or university degree with a major or substantial coursework in a CYS-related field such as early childhood, elementary, secondary, or special education; child/youth development; psychology; youth program administration; or closely related fields like social work, home economics, physical education, or related behavioral sciences.
- OR a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major (24 semester hours) in a relevant subject matter field, plus appropriate experience or additional coursework that provides knowledge comparable to a 4-year degree in the fields listed above.
- Minimum of 24 months of work experience in a child/youth program or a public school child/youth program.
- Program administration experience in child and youth programs.
- Ability to plan and organize work, analyze problems, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions.
- Effective oral and written communication skills in English.
Proof of education is required at the time of application. Education must be directly related to the position; general education courses do not count toward the credit total.
Area of Consideration
This job is open to candidates currently residing within the local commuting area (defined as a 60-mile radius) of Fort Lee, VA. Eligible candidates include those with Military Spouse Preference (MSP) and Involuntarily Separated Military Preference (ISMP).
