CYP Custodian

About the role

The Custodian performs a variety of cleaning, housekeeping, and semi-skilled duties for CYP facilities, including facility cleaning, equipment maintenance, laundering, minor facility repairs, outdoor maintenance, and maintaining inventories of cleaning supplies. They deliver supplies, merchandise, and equipment to other CYP facilities. As needed, they move furniture and/or program equipment and assist with event setup (e.g., setting up tables and chairs).

Responsibilities

• Perform all custodial and housekeeping services according to established specifications without disrupting child and youth routines.
• Clean floors by sweeping, mopping, stripping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing; clean carpets.
• Wipe and clean mirrors, metal doorplates, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, showcases, entrance doors, activity spaces/classrooms, doorframes, switches, and other surfaces as required.
• Clean glass partitions, inside and outside windows; use stepladders and extension ladders to change light bulbs, replace blinds, and wash walls.
• Dust, wax, and polish furniture, ensuring dusting is done out of children’s reach.
• Empty and wash trashcans; inspect grounds, remove trash and debris, and report safety hazards to supervisor.
• Maintain restrooms in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition; clean, disinfect, and deodorize lavatories; replace deodorizers, toilet tissues, hand towels, and soap; report water leaks, clogged drains, and other repair needs.
• Sweep sidewalks and parking lots.
• Operate powered cleaning equipment; clean, oil, and maintain equipment; change brushes and accessories.
• Maintain cleaning supplies and advise supervisor when supplies are low or equipment needs repair or replacement.
• Ensure custodial equipment, supplies, and materials are approved by the health consultant or safety officer.
• Keep hallways, stairways, entrances, and doorways unobstructed by cleaning or maintenance operations.
• Store custodial supplies and equipment in locked cabinets or closets away from child and youth activity rooms.
• Load, unload, and assemble merchandise, equipment, and supplies; deliver them to other locations (less than 10% of the time).
• Move, set up, and rearrange furniture; assist with event setup and breakdown.
• Comply with security, fire, and sanitation rules, policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Serve as a mandatory reporter to Family Advocacy and Child Protective Services in cases of suspected child abuse or neglect.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Complete required training certificates and maintain certifications or credentials required by Federal, State, and/or national accreditation institutions for DoD’s Child and Youth Programs.
• Undergo pre-employment and random drug testing; a positive drug test or refusal to submit is grounds for removal.
• Pass a pre-employment physical, provide evidence of immunization, be free of communicable diseases, and obtain appropriate immunizations.
• Employment contingent upon proof of education if not provided at the time of application.
• Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check; discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
• Must meet federal suitability requirements, including a successful background investigation.
• Must comply with security, fire, and sanitation regulations.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of a variety of chemical and cleaning agents.
• Skill in using household and industrial equipment and attachments.
• Skill in operating, cleaning, and adjusting powered cleaning equipment.
• Physical ability to move furniture, lift and move objects over 50 lbs, walk, bend, stoop, and stand routinely.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, with strong interpersonal communication skills.

Education

Must provide a copy of your high school diploma, GED, or college transcripts (showing degree awarded/conferred) when you apply. If your degree has not been awarded, you must also provide a copy of your high school diploma or equivalent, along with certificates of completion for DoD-approved competency-based training courses and/or a valid CDA/MSA credential(s).
