Cybersecurity Engineer / Analyst
About the Role
PeopleTec is seeking a motivated Cybersecurity Engineer to join our engineering team supporting the development, integration, and security of next-generation Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities. This position is ideal for an early-career engineer with a strong cybersecurity foundation who is passionate about securing AI systems throughout their lifecycle. The successful candidate will work alongside senior engineers to develop, integrate, and harden AI-enabled capabilities supporting government and commercial customers. Responsibilities include securing AI infrastructure, implementing cybersecurity best practices, automating security controls, and assisting with the development of resilient AI environments spanning on-premises, cloud, and hybrid architectures. This position emphasizes engineering over operations, with opportunities to contribute to research and development efforts involving AI systems, containerized applications, infrastructure automation, and secure software development.
Duties
- Assist in the design, implementation, and security hardening of AI and machine learning environments
- Develop and maintain secure containerized environments using Docker and related technologies
- Implement cybersecurity controls across AI development pipelines following DevSecOps principles
- Support the engineering of secure infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) technologies
- Develop automation scripts to improve deployment, security validation, and operational efficiency
- Assist with vulnerability assessments, system hardening, and remediation activities
- Support implementation of Zero Trust and least-privilege security principles
- Perform security testing and validation of AI applications and supporting infrastructure
- Participate in threat modeling and security architecture reviews for AI-enabled systems
- Assist with detection engineering, security monitoring, and log analysis to validate defensive controls
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, engineering artifacts, and security procedures
- Collaborate with systems engineers, software developers, cybersecurity engineers, and program teams throughout the system lifecycle
Required Qualifications
- 0–3 years of professional cybersecurity or systems engineering experience (internships and significant personal projects considered)
- Fundamental understanding of cybersecurity principles, networking, operating systems, and secure system design
- Experience with Linux and Windows operating systems
- Experience with Python, PowerShell, Bash, or similar scripting languages
- Familiarity with Docker or other container technologies
- Understanding of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, DNS, routing, and firewalls
- Knowledge of NIST cybersecurity frameworks and secure engineering principles
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- One or more industry certifications such as Security+, CySA+, SSCP, GSEC, Linux+, or equivalent
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Assurance, or related technical field
- Travel: 15%
Desired Skills
- Experience deploying or securing AI/LLM environments
- Experience securing agentic AI frameworks, local inference platforms, or Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) environments
- Familiarity with AI security concepts including prompt injection, model abuse, data poisoning, model supply chain risks, and secure model deployment
- Experience implementing policy-as-code or security guardrails using technologies such as Open Policy Agent (OPA)
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Ansible
- Experience with Git, GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, and DevSecOps workflows
- Experience deploying or administering cloud environments (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud)
- Familiarity with Kubernetes or container orchestration platforms
- Experience with SIEM technologies such as Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, Elastic, or Wazuh
- Experience with detection engineering, threat hunting, or MITRE ATT&CK mapping
- Knowledge of secure software development lifecycle (SSDLC) practices
- Familiarity with NIST SP 800-53, NIST SP 800-171, NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF), or MITRE ATLAS
- Experience contributing to GitHub or open-source security or AI projects
- Active or previously held DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance

Pay
In compliance with Colorado's Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the salary range for this role is ~$65,000 - $100,000; however, PeopleTec considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and critical skills.
