What To Expect
Join the Tesla Energy Applications Engineering team and help accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy! Our team delivers leading-edge cybersecurity solutions for critical energy infrastructure, including utility-scale battery energy storage systems such as Megapack. Security is a crucial part of Tesla’s strategy, and we are looking for an exemplary engineer who is passionate about cybersecurity, stays up to date with technological changes in both cybersecurity threats and tools, and is willing to challenge and improve existing industry best practices.
What You'll Do
- Apply Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) principles to drive cybersecurity risk assessments for Tesla Energy products and systems, including utility-scale battery projects.
- Ensure solutions are secure by design and identify appropriate product-level and project-level cybersecurity controls.
- Design, build, and validate cybersecurity tooling and features — including intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), network monitoring tools, security dashboards, and automation for vulnerability scanning, log analysis, and continuous security monitoring.
- Write specifications and test plans, build and test prototypes, manage deployment, and document new capabilities.
- Develop and maintain project-level cybersecurity guidelines and reference architectures — including DMZ design, firewall rule sets, network segmentation, and secure remote access — to ensure consistent security implementation across critical infrastructure environments.
- Facilitate implementation of cybersecurity measures required for critical infrastructure telemetry and remote access, ensuring solutions meet applicable standards such as NERC-CIP and IEC 62443.
- Provide technical support both internally and externally with customers throughout the sales and deployment of Tesla products into new and complex applications.
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related engineering discipline with 3+ years of work experience; or equivalent experience and evidence of exceptional ability.
- Strong knowledge of cybersecurity for industrial control systems.
- Familiar with North American and international energy industry standards such as NERC-CIP, IEC 62443 (including 2-1, 3-2, and 4-2), and ISO 27001.
- Familiar with Operational Technology energy systems including devices such as meters, inverters, SCADA controllers, and network systems, with hands-on experience in communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, MQTT, and OPC UA.
- Experience with implementing industry-standard cybersecurity requirements: DMZ, jump/proxy servers, firewall rules, network segmentation, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
- Skilled with automation and familiarity with programming languages such as Python, C, C++, Rust, Go, or similar.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
