Customs Entry Writer
About the role
The Custom House Brokerage (CHB) Import Entry Writer is responsible for the accurate and compliant preparation, submission, and management of U.S. Customs import entries. This role requires strong knowledge of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations, tariff classification, valuation, and Partner Government Agency requirements to ensure regulatory compliance, mitigate risk, and support efficient cargo movement.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, validate, and transmit import entries, including CBP Forms 3461, 7501, 7512, and AES filings, in compliance with CBP regulations.
- Ensure timely and accurate cargo clearance while meeting client and operational deadlines.
- Review commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, certificates of origin, and other supporting documentation.
- Determine the correct HTS classification, duty rates, valuation, country of origin, and applicability of trade programs, including USMCA, FTAs, and ADD/CVD.
- Cook with carriers, terminals, warehouse operators, government agencies, clients, and internal teams to resolve discrepancies or clearance issues.
- Maintain complete and accurate shipment documentation and entry records.
- Serve as a subject matter resource for customs brokerage entry questions.
- Communicate clearly with clients regarding documentation requirements, clearance status, and compliance impacts.
Requirements
- Minimum 3+ years of experience as an Import Entry Writer within a licensed Custom House Brokerage.
- Strong working knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations, HTSUS, valuation, and trade compliance.
- Experience preparing and filing formal and informal import entries.
- Knowledge of Partner Government Agency requirements, including FDA, USDA, EPA, FCC, and Census.
- Proficiency with customs brokerage software systems, such as Descartes, CargoWise, SAP GTS, and ACS/ACE environments.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required.
- A high attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple entries and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
