New Recruitments and Retention Incentives

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) offers incentives to attract new hires and retain current officers. Newly appointed CBPOs will be offered up to a $15,000 incentive per year, for a three-year service contract, in Arizona and California. For a four-year service contract, the incentive is available in Hawaii and North Dakota.

Salary

The Annual Base Salary for newly appointed CBPOs varies depending on the duty location. The range is from $63,431 to $127,464 per year. Overtime pay can add up to $45,000 annually.

Qualifications

  • Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level that includes detaining suspected violators, enforcing laws, utilizing intelligence techniques, conducting interviews, and making rapid, accurate judgments and decisions.
  • Education: A minimum of a master's degree, or two or more years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or an LL.B. or J.D. from an accredited college or university.
  • Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate-level education.

Other Requirements

  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Residency: Must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
  • Age Restriction: Must be referred for selection to the Customs and Border Protection Officer position before reaching their 40th birthday.
  • Veterans' Preference: Eligible for Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA).
  • Formal Training: Required to complete a paid pre-academy orientation and attend the CBP Field Operations Academy.
