Responsibilities

  • Enforce customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
  • Facilitate the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
  • Conduct inspections of individuals and conveyances.
  • Determine the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
  • Prevent the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband.

Requirements

The typical assignments include:

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances.
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband.

Qualifications

  • GS-5: Experience or Education/Substitution/Combination of Experience and Education.
  • GS-7: Experience or Education/Substitution/Combination of Experience and Education.
  • GS-9: Previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience.

Skills

Must have the ability to meet and deal with people, learn and apply a body of facts, perform physical inspections, utilize observational techniques, evaluate facts, review documentation, apply Federal, State, or local laws and regulations, make determinations in compliance with laws and regulations, and make arrests, seizures, and penalties based on findings.

Pay

Annual base salary varies by duty location. Officers are eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to the starting salary. Recruitment incentives are available for some duty locations.
