Summary
Under general supervision of Collection/Customer Service Supervisor, perform wide variety of duties to collect patient accounts receivable for Brown University Health. - Utilize the Aged Trial Balance report to review patient accounts, ascertain previous billing and collection action, and work credit balances.
- Refer outstanding accounts to collection agencies when necessary, interact with precollect and collection agencies, document collection actions, and resolve billing questions.
- Research and resolve billing issues from patients, attorneys, and third-party payors; provide itemized bills upon request.
- File liens in cases of liabilities and assist attorneys in court appearances for small claims cases.
- Follow up on liability cases and refer problem compromises to supervisor for approval.
- Provide billing information to other healthcare providers and assist patients with Financial Assistance Applications and payment plans.
- Receive and verify patient information, including changes in address, insurance coverage, and effective dates; assist with Financial Assistance Applications.
- Review returned mail to correct and update patient accounts, generating revised bills as needed.
- Participate in educational programs, service meetings, and committees as required.
- Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Basic Knowledge
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of Fair Debt Collector Act, computer operations, and routine accounting procedures.
Experience
- One year experience in a health care collection environment.
