Customer Field Test Engineer (GR 23)

About the role

The Customer Field Test (CFT) Engineer supports the Powertrain Validation team by planning, organizing, and monitoring all assigned North American powertrain field tests. This role involves monitoring field tests of new or modified components, interfacing with customers and dealers to ensure correct component installation and maintenance, compiling results, and assisting in failure analysis. The position requires on-call support for customer issues during off-shift hours and up to 30% travel to customer and service dealer sites.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, coordinating, and monitoring assigned powertrain field test programs under the direction of senior engineers.
• Support field test activities by helping define test requirements, schedules, and tracking project progress.
• Assist in the setup and verification of test vehicles, instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and related equipment.
• Collect, organize, and perform preliminary analysis of test data to support engineering evaluations and product validation efforts.
• Monitor vehicle and component performance during field tests and report findings to the engineering team.
• Support failure investigations and root cause analysis by gathering field information, reviewing data, and documenting observations.
• Work closely with customers and service dealers to help ensure proper installation, operation, and maintenance of test components.
• Prepare technical summaries, reports, presentations, and test documentation for engineering reviews.
• Participate in developing and improving test procedures, methods, and best practices.
• Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Service, Manufacturing, and Product Development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive, Systems, or related discipline) required.
• 0–2 years of relevant engineering experience through internships, co-op assignments, academic projects, or professional employment.
• Strong interest in vehicle systems, powertrain technologies, testing, and product validation.
• Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to learn and apply engineering principles, test methodologies, and data analysis techniques.
• Demonstrated initiative, adaptability, and willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and respond to changing project priorities.
• Basic mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting experience preferred.
• Familiarity with commercial vehicles, automotive systems, data acquisition tools, or field testing processes is a plus.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience with data analysis tools is beneficial.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $70,500–$105,800 annually.
