Custodian - WB

Department: Custodial – West Bristol School
Reports to: Site Supervisor

About the role

Maintains the district's school buildings in a state of operating excellence to ensure no disruptions to the educational program.

Responsibilities

• Assist in maintaining seasonal grounds work (snow, lawn).
• Clean and preserve designated spaces, equipment, and building areas.
• Restock disposable items and provide head custodian with inventory usage and data.
• Assist visitors with directions, facility access, and equipment setup.
• Maintain building and grounds security during school days.
• Operate and maintain custodial machinery and equipment.
• Perform minor building repairs.
• Substitute for the head custodian on a short-term basis.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Assist in cleaning boilers.
• Perform related work as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to communicate effectively with groups and other employees.
• Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using units of American money, weight, volume, and distance.
• Basic computer skills for job-related hardware and software applications.
• Ability to solve practical problems in situations with limited standardization.
• Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
• Awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, and talk or hear.
• Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, squat, stoop, kneel, or climb ladders.
• Occasionally required to sit.
• Continuous use of hand strength to grasp tools.
• Frequent bending or twisting of the neck and trunk.
• Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (e.g., cleaning supplies, pails, unloading trucks).
• Occasionally lift heavier items with assistance.
• Push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines.
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

• Regularly works indoors; occasionally works outdoors.
• Works near or with moving mechanical equipment.
• Occasionally works with toxic or caustic chemicals (e.g., petroleum products, degreasers, sprays).
• Must meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
• Moderate noise level in the work environment.

Pay

Salary range: $25.85 – $28.21 per hour (per contractual agreement).
