CUSTODIAN RESIDENT- ROLLING HILLS ELEMENTARY

About the Role

Under direction, this position performs highly responsible custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. Employees in this role ensure school personnel, students, and the public have an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place to work and conduct school activities. Responsibilities include daily unlocking and securing of facilities, routine inspection of facilities and grounds for hazardous conditions, and assuming crew leader duties when directed.

Responsibilities

• Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
• Perform daily opening and securing of assigned school facility, including unlocking gates, administration and classroom doors, inspecting grounds and facilities for hazards, and turning on light systems.
• Use electrical cleaning equipment (e.g., vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high-speed buffers) to clean the assigned facility during assigned hours.
• Use appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions and state regulatory standards to ensure personal, student, public, and staff safety.
• Perform custodial tasks such as emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, washing windows, dusting furniture, and cleaning vents, fans, and walls.
• Perform sanitizing tasks in restrooms, kitchens, food areas, and cafeterias.
• Perform physically demanding tasks requiring heavy custodial equipment, such as mopping, stripping, waxing, and floor buffing.
• Respond to emergency situations to confine, resolve, or prevent hazardous conditions (e.g., spills, broken windows, broken locks).
• Move furniture and other equipment as part of duties.
• Clean equipment and tools after use and maintain cleanliness and order in storage areas.
• Report equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs to the immediate supervisor.
• Perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment, such as changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, and buffer machine pads.
• Perform non-cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance, such as changing light bulbs, filling paper and soap dispensers, and assisting in setting up for meetings/conferences.
• Function independently or as part of a custodial crew, depending on the task (e.g., seasonal facility preparations or major custodial projects).
• Perform lead custodian duties when applicable, including planning and coordinating tasks, training custodians in chemical use (OSHA standards), and ordering materials and supplies.
• Assume duties of Custodial Crew Leader in their absence, vacancy, or as directed.
• Keep up to date on current technology relevant to the role and attend training to maintain required skill levels.
• Maintain timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED with demonstrated ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must obtain Custodian certification issued by the Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) within one year of hire. OCPS provides training for this certification.
• New hires (as of March 19, 2007) must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS).

• Human Interaction: Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and interpretation to others on applying procedures and standards to specific situations.
• Equipment Utilization: Ability to operate, maneuver, and control electrically powered custodial equipment and hand-held cleaning tools.
• Verbal Aptitude: Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information.
• Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and calculate decimals and percentages.
• Functional Reasoning: Ability to follow written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions with some latitude for independent judgment in semi-routine tasks.
• Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving frequent change and pre-defined duties.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Physical Ability: Tasks involve heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling objects weighing 20–50 pounds (occasionally up to 100 pounds).
• Sensory Requirements: Tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate odors, depths, and oral communications; most tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
• Environmental Factors: Regular exposure to adverse conditions such as strong odors, fumes, dust, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature extremes, noise, disease, pathogenic substances, and toxic/poisonous agents.
