About the role

The University Student Housing (USH) at MSU offers a unique, on-campus living experience for students and their families. The department manages 18 active on-campus communities including residence halls and apartments, housing up to 6,500 residents. The mission includes providing clean, attractive, well-maintained, comfortable living environments, ensuring orderly and effective administration, and promoting maturity and academic success.

Responsibilities

  • Custodians provide cleaning and light maintenance services for residence halls, student apartments, and associated areas.
  • Custodians may work individually or on a team.
  • This position involves interacting professionally and positively with students, tenants, and summer conferencing guests to support the department's mission and aid in retention.
  • The primary emphasis is on:
    • Cleaning public areas such as restrooms, laundry areas, stairwells, etc.
    • Carpeted and hard-surface floor care.
    • Trash removal.
    • Setting up and tearing down areas like residence hall rooms, office spaces, and public spaces as needed.
    • Other related custodial duties.
  • Actively participates as part of the team while performing other duties in support of the department’s mission.

Requirements

  • Experience working in custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, etc.
  • Experience working effectively with minimal or no supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience providing excellent customer service.
  • Experience operating floor scrubbers, extractors, or similar janitorial equipment.
  • Certifications, classes completed, or knowledge of safety procedures utilized in a custodial, janitorial or housekeeping position.

Physical Demands

  • Moving up and down a step ladder.
  • Bending, kneeling, stretching and general moving about while stocking products.
  • Gripping handles on equipment.
  • Performing repetitive motions related to job duties.
  • Regular exposure to cleaning solutions.
  • Sometimes shovel snow.
