About the role
The University Student Housing (USH) at MSU offers a unique, on-campus living experience for students and their families. The department manages 18 active on-campus communities including residence halls and apartments, housing up to 6,500 residents. The mission includes providing clean, attractive, well-maintained, comfortable living environments, ensuring orderly and effective administration, and promoting maturity and academic success.
Responsibilities
- Custodians provide cleaning and light maintenance services for residence halls, student apartments, and associated areas.
- Custodians may work individually or on a team.
- This position involves interacting professionally and positively with students, tenants, and summer conferencing guests to support the department's mission and aid in retention.
- The primary emphasis is on:
- Cleaning public areas such as restrooms, laundry areas, stairwells, etc.
- Carpeted and hard-surface floor care.
- Trash removal.
- Setting up and tearing down areas like residence hall rooms, office spaces, and public spaces as needed.
- Other related custodial duties.
- Actively participates as part of the team while performing other duties in support of the department’s mission.
Requirements
- Experience working in custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, etc.
- Experience working effectively with minimal or no supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience providing excellent customer service.
- Experience operating floor scrubbers, extractors, or similar janitorial equipment.
- Certifications, classes completed, or knowledge of safety procedures utilized in a custodial, janitorial or housekeeping position.

Physical Demands

- Frequently moving, transporting and placing containers/objects up to 30 lbs, and occasionally up to 100 lbs. (items may include stacking chairs, folding tables, floor sealer, bed frames, dressers, desks, etc.).
- Moving up and down stairs occasionally while carrying containers/objects.
- Moving up and down a step ladder.
- Bending, kneeling, stretching and general moving about while stocking products.
- Gripping handles on equipment.
- Performing repetitive motions related to job duties.
- Regular exposure to cleaning solutions.
- Sometimes shovel snow.
