About the role
Perform a variety of cleaning and minor maintenance tasks according to an established cleaning schedule. Serve as a bus driver or substitute bus driver as required by the principal, maintaining all state-mandated certifications.
Responsibilities
- Follow all Wayne County Public Schools, state, and federal rules, policies, and procedures for school facilities.
- Scrub, dust, sweep, mop, vacuum, wax, and polish floors in rooms, hallways, and closets.
- Wash windows, blinds, woodwork, walls, and other surfaces.
- Scrub and clean restrooms; replenish tissue, towels, soap, and other supplies.
- Empty wastebaskets and trash receptacles; pick up litter in buildings and on school grounds.
- Lock, unlock, and secure buildings as requested.
- Move, arrange, or set up equipment, supplies, or furniture as directed.
- Make minor repairs to furniture or facilities; report major damages to supervisor.
- Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
- Maintain adequate cleaning supplies and materials on site.
- Clean and perform minor repairs or adjustments to heating and air conditioning equipment; change filters.
- Keep steps, walkways, and parking lots free of ice, snow, or hazardous materials.
- Participate in scheduled training workshops and apply new knowledge and skills.
- Perform other cleaning or maintenance tasks as requested by the principal or department administrator.
Requirements
- Minimum high school diploma or GED.
- Valid state bus driver certification or willingness to obtain and maintain it.
- Functional knowledge of custodial tools, materials, cleaning agents, and methods.
- Willingness to learn the correct use of mechanical equipment in school buildings.
- Ability to follow written and oral directions accurately.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the public.
- Ability to accept constructive criticism.
- Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, push or pull 75 pounds, and stand or walk 100% of the time without fatigue.
Skills
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Sufficient mechanical aptitude to perform minor repairs and equipment maintenance.
