About the role

The Custodian at South University is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of campus buildings, performing maintenance tasks, and responding to special requests. Responsibilities

  • Unlock and check all entry doors and classrooms, ensuring no maintenance issues and cleaning as needed.
  • Regularly clean and restock restrooms, including dusting, disinfecting, mopping, vacuuming, and sweeping floors.
  • Clean carpets, strip, scrub, buff, and wax floors using appropriate equipment and following safety protocols.
  • Maintain and move furniture, equipment, and materials to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the campus building.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance, check fire extinguishers, test emergency lighting, and order cleaning supplies.
  • Report necessary repairs and safety concerns to facility management.
  • Pull trash from offices and clean as requested.
  • Maintain orderly janitorial closets and stock when necessary.
  • Assist in securing campus buildings by verifying exits and locking doors, turning off lights, and activating security alarms.
  • Respond to special requests for assistance from other departments, following facility management directives.

Requirements

  • High school degree or GED required.
  • At least 6 months experience in the housekeeping industry, preferably 2 years in a post-secondary institution.
  • Understanding of cleaning and maintenance methods and equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a wide range of populations.
  • Superior organizational, prioritization, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Frequent exposure to heavy dust, dirt, chemical fumes, and potential hazards.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods without control over rest periods.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, crawling, and operating various cleaning tools.
