Custodian

About the role

The Custodian position at South University is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and performing minor maintenance tasks within campus buildings. This role is integral to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities

• Unlock and secure campus buildings, checking for maintenance issues and cleaning as needed.
• Regularly clean and restock restrooms, keeping floors clean and safe.
• Maintain and repair equipment, check fire extinguishers, and order supplies.
• Respond to special requests and assist with event setups.
• Secure buildings by verifying all personnel have left and locking doors.
• Perform light landscaping and maintenance tasks as needed.

Requirements

• A high school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 6 months of experience in the housekeeping industry.
• At least 2 years of experience in a similar setting, preferably in a post-secondary institution.
• Understanding of cleaning and maintenance techniques.
• Knowledge of custodial equipment and supplies.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
• Physical stamina for bending, stooping, and crawling.

Qualifications

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Superior interpersonal skills with a wide range of populations.
• Frequent lifting up to 25 pounds.
• Standing and walking for extended periods.
• Sitting for extended periods with no control over rest periods.
• Pushing/pulling cleaning tools and operating various equipment.

Skills

• Understanding of working methods and procedures for cleaning and minor maintenance.
• Knowledge of custodial equipment and supplies.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people.
