Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts
- Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires
- Scrubbs, hoses down, disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily
- Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary
- Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of repair
- Cleans all chalkboards or wipe off boards as needed
- Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the school administration
- Shovels, plows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as needed
- Keeps the grounds free from debris and reports major repairs needed promptly to the head
- Reports immediately to the principal and head custodian any emergency or danger to school
- Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and extended work hours have been approved
- Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy
- Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off
- Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and other waste materials
- Performs other duties as assigned by the head custodian or principal
Education And/or Experience
- High school graduate or GED preferred
- Must be 18 years old
Other Skills And Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
- Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies
Physical Demands
- Regularly stands, walks, uses hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls
- Frequently reaches with hands and arms
- Sometimes squats, stoops, or kneels, reaches above the head and reaches forward
- Continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders
- Continuously bends or twists at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this position
- Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails, and unloading trucks
- Occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 90 pounds such as bulk furniture
- Sometimes pushes/pulls items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines
Work Environment
- Works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors
- Near or with moving mechanical equipment
- May occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays
- Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
- Frequent interruptions and immediate attention to unexpected situations are expected
