Position Overview

The Regional Learning Center in Torrington is seeking a dedicated, reliable Full-Time Custodian to join our facilities team. Working under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, you will maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for our staff and the children we serve.

Major Responsibilities

  • Daily Maintenance & Cleaning
    • Sanitize assigned zones: Clean, sweep, mop, and vacuum offices, classrooms, conference rooms, and restrooms.
    • Manage waste: Execute trash removal and recycling according to agency procedures and local laws.
    • Event setup: Set up and break down furniture and equipment for scheduled events.
  • Security & Safety
    • Secure facilities: Perform a shift-opening walkthrough and fully lock down the building at night.
    • Ensure compliance: Maintain clear storage areas and follow rigid fire safety protocols.
    • Inspect gear: Monitor facility equipment and log conditions using daily checklists.
  • Maintenance & Emergency Response
    • Perform light repairs: Handle minor, routine maintenance tasks independently.
    • Escalate issues: Identify and document complex issues requiring professional trade technicians.
    • Provide backup coverage: Cover shifts for scheduled days off, weekends, or short-notice facility needs.
    • Respond to emergencies: Arrive on-site in a reasonable timeframe for urgent after-hours facility issues.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Physical Demands
    • Heavy lifting: Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly.
    • Mobility: Continuous bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, and standing.
  • Logistics & Flexibility
    • Transportation: Must possess a valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle for travel.
    • Scheduling: Flexibility to shift hours (early, late, or weekends) on short notice.

Skills & Attributes

  • Experience: Prior commercial or school custodial experience is preferred.
  • Child-safe aptitude: A positive attitude and suitability for working around children.
  • Professionalism: Strong interpersonal skills, reliable judgment, and consistent attendance.
  • Task management: Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and problem-solve independently.
