About the Role

Under the direction of the Building Manager or Housekeeping Manager, the Housekeeping Supervisor oversees housekeeping functions for a multi-unit residence hall facility, which houses up to 2,000 residents, and non-residential/common areas up to 200,000 sq. feet. Responsible for daily supervision of between 16-20 full-time career housekeepers and up to 10 seasonal casual staff. Ensure housekeeping/maintenance standards of meeting and exceeding customer expectations are kept. Provide on-the-job training to staff, including proper use of chemicals and equipment, and ensure compliance with published safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise custodial staff and work, ensuring proper procedures for cleaning and sanitation of public areas, office space, and meeting rooms.
  • Conduct on-site inspections of units for quality control and maintenance needs, involving walking, standing, climbing (e.g., stairs and ladders), stooping, and crouching.
  • Provide on-the-job training to staff, including proper use of chemicals and equipment.
  • Manage personnel-related matters, such as employee training, appraisal, career development, interviewing, selection, employee relations, and corrective action.
  • Prepare written schedules, plans, employee performance evaluations, payroll reports (e.g., overtime variances), and other operational/administrative reports or correspondence.
  • Assemble material and equipment inventories, monitor supply usage, and project budget costs involving supplies, capital equipment, and staffing expenses.
  • Organize and monitor assignments to complete work in a timely manner with changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Interact effectively and tactfully with department/university personnel and the public on matters pertaining to unit operations.
  • Communicate effectively in one-on-one and small group settings to delegate work assignments, conduct unit business, and explain policies/procedures.
  • Encourage and motivate individuals to work as a team to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Work overtime, swing shifts, and weekends to supervise staff and/or solve operational problems.
  • Drive a University vehicle to transport equipment and/or materials between buildings (valid California Driver’s License required).

Requirements

  • 3-4 years of custodial experience in a large institution (Required).
  • 1-2 years of experience leading or overseeing teams (Preferred).
  • Experience in a higher education environment (Preferred).
  • Working knowledge of University policies and procedures relating to Staff Personnel Policies and AFSCME agreements regarding performance evaluations, disciplinary procedures, training, recruitment, and selection.
  • Working knowledge of time reporting and payroll procedures at the unit level (Preferred).
  • Skill in reading and comprehending standard English text, such as University and Departmental procedures, reports, correspondence, and Material Safety Data Sheets (Required).
  • Ability to write concise, logical, and grammatically correct English for reports, evaluations, and correspondence (Required).
  • Working knowledge of safety rules and procedures for equipment and cleaning/sanitizing chemicals (Required).
  • Knowledge of portable fire-fighting equipment, including types, classes, required locations, testing methods, and maintenance (Preferred).
  • Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, lift, reach, and walk for long periods (Required).
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with personnel at various levels and the public (Required).
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction (Required).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish (Preferred).
  • Valid California Driver’s License (noncommercial Class C) to drive a University vehicle (Required).

Qualifications

  • Must possess and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License (Required).
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Employment contingent upon completion of a satisfactory background investigation, Live Scan background check, and pre-placement physical examination.
  • Continued employment contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record (subject to California DMV "Pull Notice System").

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, and certifications, among other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common.

Schedule

Hours vary based on operational needs. Position may require working overtime, swing shifts, and weekends.
