CUSTODIAL/MAINTENANCE

Under the direction of the Director of Campus Planning and Facilities or their designated supervisor, this employee performs custodial work and assists with grounds maintenance as needed. Assists during inclement weather with safety, prevention, and removal of snow/ice buildup on site. This is a night shift position.

Responsibilities

• Assisting with set-ups for on-campus events, including monitoring the electronic facilities reservation system for initial set-ups or changes based on client needs and returning the space to its original set-up
• Monitoring the electronic work order system and entering information on assigned work orders for departmental tracking
• Minimal daily interaction with the electronic mail system, responding as necessary, and maintaining a personal calendar
• Completing all assigned web-based or in-person training courses assigned by Human Resources and/or supervisors
• Attending all mandatory college and departmental meetings and continuing education training (shift adjustments may be made to accommodate training schedules)
• General cleaning of offices, classrooms, corridors, restrooms, storage areas, etc.
• Vacuuming and dusting of fixtures and floors
• Campus-wide trash collection and disposal
• Window washing (interior and exterior)
• Floor care – such as stripping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, wood floor care, and polishing
• Painting – including preparation and clean-up of minor projects
• Assisting with building safety (e.g., reporting fires, flooding, etc.)
• Following loading and unloading procedures (up to 65 lbs.)
• Assisting with grounds work as directed, including string trimming, weeding, mulching, push mowing, plant care, power washing, campus-wide exterior garbage collection, and event set-ups
• Minor repair of cleaning equipment, flooring, fixtures, furnishings, and equipment
• Other duties as assigned within the classification of this position

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required
• Possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license
• Minimum of one year of related experience

Skills

• Basic proficiency with computer operation
• Ability to work on ladders or in tight spaces, as well as outside in all types of weather
• Ability to follow oral or written instructions
• Ability to work well with others
• Ability to operate machinery such as snow removal equipment, lifts, forklifts, etc. (preferred, but training will be provided as necessary)
• Ability to assist with grounds maintenance as assigned
• Ability to work any change in shift with 72-hour notice
• Ability to report to work early (2 hours) or stay late (2 hours) in the event of an emergency
• Good physical condition to perform duties requiring stooping, bending, lifting (up to 65 lbs.), and climbing ladders

Work Environment

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with others in person and on the telephone and receive written and oral instruction. The employee frequently operates hand tools, power equipment, and cleansing chemicals and addresses unclean surfaces and fixtures. The employee frequently walks, bends, stoops, and moves objects of 10 lbs. and occasionally accesses elevated and lower-level areas and lifts objects of light to heavy weight.

The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate but can be loud during certain assignments.
