About the Role

Under direction, this position functions as a crew leader for custodial personnel engaged in highly responsible custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. The role ensures school personnel, students, and the public have an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place to work and conduct school activities. Responsibilities include daily unlocking and securing of facilities, routine inspection of facilities and grounds for hazardous conditions, and maintaining adequate supply inventories. The position oversees and participates in all facets of the assigned work.

Responsibilities

• Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
• Plan and coordinate daily custodial tasks; delegate tasks to custodial personnel; monitor and inspect work for compliance with assignments.
• Provide training and instruction to custodial personnel, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards for safe use and application of chemical supplies.
• Perform daily opening and securing of the assigned school facility, including unlocking doors, inspecting grounds and facilities for hazards, and managing lighting and security systems.
• Monitor materials inventory and supply levels; order new stock according to established policies; coordinate custodial equipment service and repair.
• Use electrical cleaning equipment (e.g., vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high-speed buffers) to clean the facility during assigned hours.
• Use appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively, adhering to instructions and state regulatory standards for personal, student, and staff safety.
• Perform custodial tasks such as emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, washing windows, dusting furniture, and cleaning vents, fans, and walls.
• Perform sanitizing tasks in restrooms, kitchens, food areas, and cafeterias.
• Perform physically demanding tasks, including mopping, stripping, waxing, and floor buffing.
• Respond to emergency situations to confine, resolve, or prevent hazardous conditions (e.g., spills, broken windows, broken locks).
• Move furniture and other equipment as part of duties.
• Clean equipment and tools after use; maintain cleanliness and order in storage areas; report equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs.
• Perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment (e.g., changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, changing buffer machine pads).
• Perform non-cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance, such as changing light bulbs, filling paper and soap dispensers, and assisting in setting up for meetings/conferences.
• Lead custodial crews in major projects, such as seasonal facility preparations or floor stripping and waxing.
• Stay updated on current technology used by OCPS; attend training to maintain required skill levels.
• Maintain timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Up to two (2) years of successful custodial work experience with demonstrated leadership abilities, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must obtain Custodian certification issued by the Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) within one (1) year of hire. OCPS provides training for this certification.
• Effective March 19, 2007, all new hires must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS).

• Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations, including decimals and percentages.
• Functional Reasoning: Ability to apply principles of rational systems and interpret instructions in various forms (written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule).
• Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against measurable criteria.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Physical Ability: Tasks involve heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying objects (20-50 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds).
• Sensory Requirements: Ability to perceive and discriminate odors, depths, and visual details; some tasks require oral communication.
• Environmental Factors: Regular exposure to adverse conditions, such as strong odors, fumes, dust, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature extremes, noise, disease, pathogenic substances, and toxic/poisonous agents.
