About the role

This position is a working supervisor position responsible for overseeing and coordinating the maintenance and cleaning of buildings to ensure a safe, clean, and functional learning environment. Building Supervisors train, motivate, counsel, supervise, and evaluate subordinates in addition to managing their own tasks and work responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the efficient operation of the facility including opening and closing the building, and troubleshooting emergencies as they occur;
  • Coordinates work, schedules, and relevant information with Daytime Custodial Lead or Building Manager;
  • Assists Custodial Zone Manager with annual performance evaluations;
  • Maintains a working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook email software and manage daily email monitoring and correspondence;
  • Inspects assigned areas for cleanliness and safety and manages all aspects of the process including, feedback, correction, conflict management, and overall performance evaluation of subordinates, refers serious infractions to Building Manager and the Assistant Director for Custodial Services;
  • Evaluates practices, procedures, and facilities to assess safety concerns, monitor safety compliance and work to enforce a culture of safety;
  • Manages the evening custodial staff schedules and building usage;
  • Captures and coordinates delivery throughout the schools;
  • Manages preventative maintenance schedules to ensure the safety of the workers and the students;
  • Trains custodial staff on proper procedures, chemical usage, equipment usage, and safety;
  • Coordinates, tracks, and manages all schedule changes and updates as they pertain to internal and external events (e.g., facility rentals, spring concerts, athletic events, etc.);
  • Completes daily custodial tasks as they pertain to the job (e.g., dust, mop, vacuum, trash removal, etc.);
  • Responds to accidents or potential safety hazards such as spills, restroom problems, and student illnesses;
  • Operates various pieces of power equipment (e.g., pressure washers, scrubbers, buffers, drills, and other specialty equipment);
  • Responds to teacher and administrator requests, emergencies, and personnel requests to ensure cleanliness, safety, and efficiency of the work unit;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management;
  • Designated as Essential Personnel, which requires that the employees report to their job site during emergencies, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergencies.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school, with a minimum of two years of custodial experience and a minimum of two year's supervisory experience is required.
  • Internal candidates must possess ACPS Custodial Certification.
  • External candidates must obtain ACPS Custodial Certification within 18 months of hire.

Qualifications

  • Satisfactory health condition in order to meet the physical requirements of the job.
  • Negative drug screening and negative tuberculin test required.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, depending on assignment.
  • Must be able to read and follow instructions in English.

Skills

  • Able to follow oral and written directions, work independently, and be able to work in a team setting.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment to include the use of heavy commercial cleaning equipment such as high-powered buffers and scrubbers.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to equipment operation, hazardous materials, and other work-related precautions.
  • Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees and the public.
  • Effectively responds to routine inquiries and disputes.
  • Plans and organizes daily work routine.
  • Estimates the expected time of completion of elements of work and establishes a personal schedule accordingly.
  • Implements work activities in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules.
  • Provides a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
  • Able to communicate complex ideas and proposals effectively so others will understand.
  • Excellent ability to listen and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing.
  • Able to use basic math skills to compute cleaning solution dilutions.
  • Able to use logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, and evaluate situations and exercise good judgment to make appropriate decisions.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $35,000 - $45,000 annually.

Schedule

The position is the primary supervisor working day shift in elementary and middle schools more than 90,000 square feet, and evening shift supervisor at comprehensive high schools.
