Culinary Assistant | Food Services

Under the direction of Food Services Leadership, performs food service duties throughout the unit.

Responsibilities

• Assists and/or prepares customer orders, including but not limited to: eggs made to order, items on the grill or fryer, and kitchen preparation.
• Follows recipes and retrieves recipe(s) from electronic database.
• Performs food prep including but not limited to: cleaning, peeling, cutting vegetables, mixing ingredients, sandwich preparation, and food display.
• Prepares food for distribution including but not limited to plating, servings, setting up, and maintaining serving line selections.
• Provides customer service excellence while addressing students, faculty, and staff concerns and complaints; performs problem resolution; maintains safe and sanitary working conditions.
• Replaces stock regularly on a daily basis.
• Assists in the setup and/or clean-up of catering requests including but not limited to maintaining carts, buffets, and tabling catering functions for all areas throughout the District as needed.
• Delivers catering orders to designated rooms at various district locations.
• Relays orders and messages as required.
• Establishes, maintains, and enhances positive work relationships with staff, faculty, and administrators.
• Enters product deliveries into register inventory tracking system and assists in inventory counts.
• Cleans dishes, trays, pots, pans, and other relevant tools and eating equipment; performs routine cleaning.
• Cleans tables and food service areas.
• Practices honesty by demonstrating consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles, values, truthfulness, and accuracy in all actions.
• Collaborates in the instruction of culinary students and student workers.
• Performs other related duties within the scope of the position as required for the efficient operation of the division and to support institutional objectives.

Requirements

• Compliance with all state, federal, and accreditation standards/requirements, as well as all MATC policies and procedures.
• High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalency required and one (1) year of experience in a related area.

Skills

• Knowledge of the use of a variety of commercial kitchen equipment including basic and safe knife skills.
• Knowledge of personal hygiene and sanitation standards and the ability to maintain these standards.
• Skilled at basic mathematical functions and applications.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Physical ability sufficient to lift and move supplies up to 50 pounds and push or pull up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.
• Ability to walk long distances and stand during the entire shift.
• Excellent customer service skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with MATC staff, faculty, students, and the general public.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, students, and school personnel.
• Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written means.
• Self-starter with the ability to work independently, collaborate as a team member, and make decisions consistent with established rules.
• Ability to access and disseminate information using computers and proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Schedule

• Part-time position (up to 19 hours per week) located at the West Allis campus.
• Hours of operation are 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Specific work hours will be determined by the supervisor and may include some nights and weekends as needed.
• Work schedules are subject to change based on departmental needs.

MATC contributes a generous percentage towards medical insurance premium. Both plans include prescription drug coverage at no additional cost. • Dental Insurance: Group dental plan through Delta Dental. Coverage begins the first of the month following the start date. Annual maximum per covered person is $2,500; covers preventive, routine, restoration, and orthodontic benefits for dependents up to age 19.
• Vision Insurance: Group vision plan through Superior Vision. Coverage begins the first of the month following the start date. Covers eye exam, frames, lenses, and contact lenses.
• Group Life Insurance: Group term life insurance benefits through Madison National Life Insurance Company. Fully paid by the College. Amount based on annual earnings. Supplemental life insurance available for employees, spouses, and dependents.
• Long-Term Disability: Insurance through Madison National Life Company after 30 days of employment. Fully paid by the College. Benefits equal to 66 2/3% of base monthly earnings.
• Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA): Two types offered: Health Care FSA and Dependent Care FSA. Allows pre-tax dollars for medical, dental, vision expenses, and daycare expenses.
• Retirement Savings: Membership in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) for employees hired for greater than 12 months. College pays full employer contribution; employee pays full employee contribution. Five-year vesting period. Optional retirement savings plans (403(b) or 457 accounts) available.
• Sick Leave: Generous sick leave plan with accumulation up to 165 days of full sick leave and unlimited accumulation of half-pay sick leave.
• Vacation: Generous vacation policy (not available for instructors).
• Paid & Flexible Holidays: 12 paid holidays for non-faculty positions and 7 paid holidays for faculty positions. Two flexible (floating) holidays per employee per year (not available for instructors).
• Tuition Benefits: Eligible for tuition reimbursement and waiver after completing the probationary period. Up to 9 credits at MATC or $700 at other accredited institutions per fiscal year.
