Certified Teaching Assistants (CTAs) provide instructional services to students under the general supervision of a Certified Teacher.
Requirements
- NYSED Certification as a Level I Teaching Assistant (Must obtain Level III within 4 years of appointment. Recommendations for extension of Level I will only be made if all requirements for Level II have been met except the required work experience).
- Completion of required state workshops: Child Abuse Detection & Reporting, School Violence Prevention, and DASA.
Responsibilities
- Work with individual students or groups of students on special instructional projects.
- Provide the teacher with information about students to assist in developing appropriate learning and behavioral experiences.
- Assist students in the use of available instructional resources and in the development of instructional materials.
- Utilize special skills and abilities in instructional programs (e.g., foreign languages, arts, crafts, music).
- Assist in related instructional work as required.
- Support students with specific health-related activities as appropriate.
- Maintain instructional materials and manual/electronic files/records (e.g., lessons, attendance, supplies).
- Perform general clerical tasks to prepare instructional materials.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student, employee, and other sensitive information.

- Ability to report work orally and in writing to supervisors as required.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, climb, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Regularly required to reach above the head and forward.
- Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle objects, tools, or controls, and to talk and hear.
- Occasionally required to lift and/or push up to 50 pounds.
- Must have specific vision abilities for close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and color differentiation.
Work Environment
The noise level is typical for a school environment. Work is generally performed indoors with limited outside supervision of students.
Pay
Minimum starting range: $19.50 - $33.28 per hour.
