About the Role

Perform complex tasks associated with the operation of high radiation producing equipment to produce high-quality CT images. The CT technologist is responsible for maintaining a safe CT environment at all times, performing procedures or examinations under the order of a licensed medical practitioner for diagnostic interpretation or therapeutic intervention.

Responsibilities

• Operate computed tomography systems, physiologic gating devices, and associated equipment to achieve desired results.
• Select appropriate exam parameters considering established protocols and other factors influencing data acquisition.
• Evaluate CT scans for technical quality, post-process, complete CT exams in the electronic medical record, and send to PACS.
• Adjust protocols and dose as appropriate to maintain established Dose Reference Levels per ACR and AAPM guidelines.
• Obtain high-quality CT scans in a timely manner.
• Assist radiologists in developing new protocols and CT imaging techniques.
• Identify and screen patients and others according to CT guidelines for safety.
• Obtain patient history, complete and verify accurate consents, informed consent, and/or permits as needed.
• Provide patient instructions/education to gain cooperation and minimize anxiety, including monitoring patients by audio/visual means during exams.
• Position patients for CT scans using immobilization and protective equipment to comply with regulations while minimizing risk to patient, self, and others.
• Position patient and equipment to best demonstrate the anatomic area of interest, respecting the patient’s ability, safety, and comfort.
• Provide for psychological and physical needs of patients for CT procedures.
• Practice aseptic technique and apply universal precautions and infection prevention techniques at all times.
• Identify, prepare, and/or administer medications as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner.
• Perform venipuncture for contrast media administration as ordered/per test design within the scope of practice.
• Load and operate pressure/power injector for contrast media injection.
• Administer oral and/or rectal contrast as needed and perform lab draws as applicable.
• Assist radiologists with CT procedures (e.g., biopsies) and ensure time-outs are performed.
• Coordinate scheduling and patient flow.
• Assist in inventory control and perform clerical duties.
• Educate, train, orient, and assist new staff members and provide education for student technologists.
• Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and perform BLS as needed.
• Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards.
• Complete required education assignments annually and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must have successfully completed an educational program accredited by a mechanism acceptable to the ARRT.

Qualifications

Must have and maintain one of the following:

• Path 1: American Registry of Radiologic Technologists ARRT (R) and within 1 year ARRT (CT) required.
• Path 2: Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board certified (NMTCB) and within one year ARRT (CT) required.
• Path 3: Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and within one year ARRT (CT) required.
