Crossing Guard (Anticipated Openings 2026-2027)

About the role

School Crossing Guards are responsible for providing safe and protected access to and from schools for children.

Responsibilities

• Communicate and enforce Springfield Public Schools policies to all within the vicinity.
• Direct traffic flow and stop traffic as necessary.
• Escort or direct children/pedestrians across streets.
• Control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at street crossings.
• Communicate rules of safety crossing practices to children.
• Learn the location and purpose of street traffic signs within their assigned area.
• Maintain traffic flow to identify safe gaps for students/pedestrians to cross streets.
• Ensure student safety at all times.
• Establish good relationships with students, school staff, and parents.
• Work with school bus drivers to ensure children's safety when crossing streets.
• Use active listening skills and convey information effectively.
• Show problem-solving skills with sensitivity and clarity.
• Follow general rules when caring for children.
• Understand public safety and security policies and procedures.
• Absorb knowledge of child behavior.

Requirements

• High School Diploma
• Associates Degree preferred
• Must be 21 years of age or older
• Must be a City of Springfield resident

• Ability to assess the needs of children and those around them.
• Understanding of child behavior.
