General Definition of Work

The Cross-Contamination Technician under the direction of the Water Plant Superintendent plans, coordinates, and administers various day-to-day activities pertaining to the City’s Cross Connection Control Program, elevated water tower maintenance, well and pump maintenance, and water treatment plant maintenance.

Examples of Duties

  • Maintains the City’s cross contamination program.
  • Works with plumbers, homeowners, and businesses to ensure that annual backflow preventer testing is accomplished and appropriate reports are received.
  • Physically checks all of the City of Germantown’s backflow devices to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Makes sure regulations from TDEC/EPA on cross contamination rules and regulations are implemented into the City’s processes.
  • Develops and maintains accurate records of cross contamination work and reports received.
  • Scours the City in search of cross contamination systems that are not present or that have not been tested per requirements.
  • Flushes fire hydrants to circulate water throughout the system.
  • Performs other plant related duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of water distribution systems; hydraulics and plumbing systems; applicable state and local laws, rules, building codes, ordinances and related regulations governing backflow prevention, cross connections and water pollution, including Title 17 of the Safe Drinking Water Act and Uniform Plumbing Codes;
  • Knowledge of the operation of construction and maintenance tools and equipment;
  • Knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and regulations for performing mechanical maintenance;
  • Knowledge of cross contamination regulations from TDEC/EPA;
  • Knowledge of GIS database and mapping;
  • Ability to read and understand operation manuals, verbal and written instructions;
  • Ability to communicate instructions and warnings to co-workers;
  • Ability to work independently, self-motivating;
  • Ability to track cross connection program in database and mapping formats;
  • Physical ability to perform essential job duties.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED, and one year of experience operating equipment, or any combination of education, training and experience providing the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform essential job functions.
  • Computer proficiency required.
  • Valid Backflow Testers Certificate from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) or the American Water Works Association (AWWA) within twelve months from date of appointment.
  • Grade I or II Water Distribution Operator certification is preferred but not required.
