About the Role

This position provides anesthetic care for all types of patients and procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medically directing physician and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. This position administers anesthesia to patients, rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures, and ensures continuous vigilant observation of patients by monitoring their physical reaction to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents.

Responsibilities

• Maintains patient safety at all times.
• Maintains excellence in airway management and familiarity with airway adjuncts (e.g., bullard, fiberoptic scope, ILMA).
• Works within the scope of delineated clinical privileges.
• Takes precautions to minimize infection risks for patients and healthcare professionals.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
• Participates in pre-anesthetic evaluation and selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
• Performs anesthetic techniques such as IV catheter insertion, invasive monitoring, endotracheal intubation, and arterial punctures.
• Monitors patient responses to anesthesia and informs the surgeon/anesthesiologist of adverse conditions.
• Manages the anesthesia process, including induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases.
• Recognizes and corrects abnormal patient responses to anesthesia or adjunctive therapies.
• Determines the need for additional laboratory tests and provides resuscitative care.
• Evaluates and manages patients in the immediate post-operative period.
• Administers IV fluids and blood products after consultation with the surgeon/anesthesiologist.
• Documents patient status in the anesthesia record.
• Performs safety and performance checks on anesthesia equipment and verifies supplies.
• Reviews informed consent documentation and identifies surgical sites during SBAR.
• Participates in surgical pauses with the surgical team.
• Communicates with peri-operative and post-operative care teams.
• Provides anesthesia care in life-threatening emergencies in the absence of an anesthesiologist.
• Assists with teaching and evaluating newly-hired CRNAs, GRNAs, and SRNAs.
• Manages controlled substances according to hospital and regulatory guidelines.

Requirements

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in West Virginia or the applicable state.
• Board certification or recertification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.

Working Environment

May be in close contact with individuals who have infectious diseases and with toxic, harmful, or potentially hazardous compounds, solutions, and medications. Must observe rigid, standardized guidelines to guard against disease and other dangers, such as those posed by radiation, accidental needle sticks, chemicals used to sterilize instruments, and anesthetics. May be vulnerable to back injury when moving patients. May be required to be on call or work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
