Critical Infrastructure Mechanical Engineer, Field Engineering

About the role

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. As an Amazon Critical Infrastructure Engineer, you will provide full life-cycle support to AWS data centers from design inception through site improvement and maintenance. You will be the primary engineering resource for your region, offering subject matter expertise to troubleshoot, conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and create Corrective Action (CA) documentation for site and equipment failures. You will support operational issues with ad-hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews, and event support, while owning the conceptual design for data center upgrades that add capacity, improve availability, increase efficiency, and enhance sustainability.

You will interface with internal teams including data center operations, design engineering, server hardware, and environmental health and safety to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability. This role involves developing innovative solutions, working on concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions, leading engineering audits, producing risk reports with recommended mitigations, and acting as the resident engineer during new construction projects.

Responsibilities

• Provide full life-cycle engineering support for AWS data centers, from design through maintenance.
• Serve as the primary technical resource for troubleshooting, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and Corrective Action (CA) documentation.
• Support operational issues with ad-hoc training, procedure reviews, and event support for critical equipment.
• Own conceptual design for data center upgrades to improve capacity, availability, efficiency, and sustainability.
• Collaborate with internal teams (operations, design, hardware, EHS) to maintain service consistency and reliability.
• Develop innovative solutions for AWS data centers.
• Manage concurrent projects across multiple regions.
• Lead engineering audits, including on-site visits, and produce reports outlining risks with mitigations.
• Act as resident engineer during new construction, supporting commissioning and turnover.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
• Valid and active USA driver's license.
• Strong engineering judgment with the ability to provide recommendations despite uncertainty or ambiguity.
• Detail- and data-oriented with experience solving problems using engineered solutions.
• Experience managing engineering projects and consultants.
• Ability to build trust and relationships with diverse stakeholders (e.g., Operations, Controls, Construction, Design, Commissioning, Product Managers).
• Adaptability and willingness to perform field work.
• Excited about a mix of office and field work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Coursework in commercial/industrial mechanical systems.
• Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage budgets.
• Leadership and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and writing skills, with high attention to detail and quality standards.
• Data analytics skills, including data querying, scripting, and comfort working with large datasets in evolving environments.
• Experience using web-based and other software tools for calculation and data processing.

Pay

The base salary range for this position is $96,600 to $160,000 USD annually. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location. The package includes sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs).
