Critical Infrastructure Mechanical Engineer, Field Engineering

About the role

As an Amazon Critical Infrastructure Engineer, you will provide full life-cycle support to AWS data centers from design inception through site improvement and maintenance. You will be the ‘go-to’ engineering resource for your region when technical advice is needed, using your subject matter expertise to troubleshoot, conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and create Corrective Action (CA) documentation for site/equipment failures. You will directly support operational issues with ad-hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews (including critical equipment), and event support. The role involves owning the conceptual design for existing data center upgrades, adding capacity, improving availability, and increasing efficiency and sustainability. You will interface with internal teams such as data center operations, design engineering, server hardware, and environmental health and safety to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability. Additionally, you will develop innovative solutions, work on concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions, lead engineering audits, produce risk reports with recommended mitigations, and act as a resident engineer during new construction projects.

Responsibilities

• Provide full life-cycle engineering support for AWS data centers, from design to maintenance.
• Serve as the primary engineering resource for troubleshooting, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and Corrective Action (CA) documentation.
• Support operational issues with training, procedure reviews, and event support for critical equipment.
• Own conceptual design for data center upgrades to improve capacity, availability, efficiency, and sustainability.
• Collaborate with internal teams (operations, design, hardware, EHS) to maintain consistency and reliability in services.
• Develop innovative solutions for AWS data centers.
• Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions.
• Lead engineering audits, including on-site visits, and produce reports outlining risks with recommended mitigations.
• Act as resident engineer during new construction, supporting commissioning and turnover.
• Interface with stakeholders (Operations, Controls, Construction, Design, Commissioning, Product Managers, Technical Program Managers).

Requirements

• 4+ years of industrial or commercial engineering experience in mission-critical facilities (e.g., data centers, power generation, oil and gas).
• 4+ years of commissioning experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
• Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
• 3+ cumulative years of experience in industrial, municipal, or commercial engineering (e.g., data centers, power generation, oil/gas).
• Valid US driver’s license and reliable personal transportation by start date.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer License.
• Experience with regional building codes and regulations.
• Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment.
• Ability to read, interpret, and create construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
• Basic understanding of mechanical and/or electrical equipment/design related to data centers (e.g., UPS, diesel generators, switchgear, PDUs, VFDs, transfer switches, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, CRAHs, fans, air economizers, water treatment).

Pay

Base salary range: $116,800 - $160,000 USD annually (USA, TX, Lubbock). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
