Criminal Paralegal Specialist

About the role

The United States Attorney's Office seeks a Paralegal Specialist to assist in legal research, drafting pleadings, and organizing case materials. This position requires a strong foundation in legal research and document preparation.

Responsibilities

• Performs substantive legal research using a variety of research tools.
• Prepares draft legal and administrative pleadings and various other correspondence and legal documents.
• Reviews and organizes complex factual material and other documentary data.
• Provides advice on the most efficient method for preparing legal documents.
• Uses tables and citation checking with efficiency.
• Prepares a variety of substantive legal documents, including extradition requests, grand jury and trial subpoenas, interrogatory requests, and documentation relevant to acquiring evidence or testimony.
• Develops and enters various case material into a computer database.
• Prepares charts, graphs, and tables to illustrate results.
• Prepares, develops, compiles, or maintains jury instructions in preparing for trial.
• Prepares exhibits for trial which typically involve a wide range of visual materials.
• Provides litigation case management and organizes cases for court presentation.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship or Nationality.
• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.
• Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
• Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.

Qualifications

• GS-9: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level, demonstrating a basic knowledge of legal research and the ability to interpret legal decisions.
• GS-11: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level, demonstrating a practical knowledge of law, the litigation and judicial process, and applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
