Criminal Investigator

Duties

The United States Attorney's Office, District of Eastern New York is looking for a highly qualified and experienced Criminal Investigator to handle federal law enforcement matters and join a well-respected team responsible for planning, conducting, and managing complex criminal investigations related to suspected violations of federal law.

• Oversee the planning and coordination of complex investigations in one or more of the following areas: national security related offenses including counterterrorism, counterintelligence, export control, fraud, bribery and public corruption, money laundering, violent crime, or cybercrime.
• Develop and authorize operational plans and procedures for arrests and searches.
• Conduct interviews of victims, witnesses, and subjects.
• Review and analyze data such as telephone records, cell-site data, bank records, credit card records, and email.
• Provide advice and assistance to assigned Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) during investigations and prosecutions.
• Testify in the grand jury or at trial and other court proceedings as to facts and explain in detail how evidence was obtained.
• Perform and lead investigative activities, such as surveillance, undercover activities, identification and development of informants, and obtaining warrants.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

• You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.
• Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
• You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
• If selected, you may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
• Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
• You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
• You must satisfactorily complete the Criminal Investigation Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia, if not already complete. (Equivalent training is acceptable).
• You must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license while employed in the position.
• You will be required to complete and file an initial and annual OGE-450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report.
• You must qualify with and carry a firearm.
• You must successfully pass a medical examination (or have a waiver) and be found “fit for duty”.
• You must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (Sensitive Compartmented Information) security clearance.

Qualifications

GS-13: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties:

• Working as a Criminal Investigator using a wide range of investigative methods to uncover criminal violations.
• Recognizing, seizing, and preserving evidence.
• Soliciting cooperating witnesses/defendants and other sources to identify members of criminal organizations.
• Testifying in local and federal courts and before local and federal grand juries.
• Conducting or leading complex investigations in one or more of the following areas: fraud, bribery and public corruption, national security related offenses, cyber crimes, money laundering, violent crimes, and sexual assault.
• Consulting with attorneys and trial teams to provide investigative advice, ensure compliance with applicable laws, develop investigative strategy, and recommend investigative methods and techniques.
• Liaison and work collaboratively with law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal level.
