About the role

A referral list will be established based on the examination as outlined below. Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

Responsibilities

  • Documentation of existing systems and changes
  • Providing support and problem resolution for an enterprise network with over 1000 devices and more than 200 remote sites
  • Working with network engineers on projects
  • Sharing rotating on-call duties throughout the year
  • Maintaining network and server connectivity in a 24 x 7 environment
  • Assisting in the installation of new systems
  • Performing preventive maintenance as necessary
  • Interacting with various vendors on problem issues and RMA requests
  • Assisting other network engineers with infrastructure support as needed
  • Attending status and project meetings
  • Responding promptly to service requests
  • Maintaining logs and status reports as required
  • Aid in equipment installation, testing, and system administration
  • Prepare and maintain documentation
  • Plan for and submit change controls
  • Troubleshoot basic and advanced problems, make effective diagnoses, and come up with resolutions
  • Respond to service desk calls/tickets
  • Interface with application development and database administration groups
  • Ensure that systems are being backed up on a regular schedule
  • Assist on network related projects, either alone or working with other network engineers
  • Configure servers, firewalls, and other devices as necessary
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in information technology, computer science, computer engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university
  • At least three (3) years' hands-on experience in a multi-platform/vendor networking environment, including extensive hands-on experience with RedHat/SuSe Linux or Windows platforms
  • Thorough knowledge of TCP/IP; Redhat or SuSe Linux; Microsoft Server 2000/2003; Firewalls; LAN, WAN, and MAN technology; Packet analysis – Sniffer or Ethereal; Network Security

Conditions of Employment

  • Work an average scheduled workweek of 34 hours, Monday through Friday
  • Perform on-call rotation when they must be available on-call for production problems 24 hours per day, 7 days a week
  • Perform off-hours system changes and updates
  • Carry a pager and/or cell phone
  • Travel within Baltimore County, and outside of the County for work and training
  • May be required to use their own vehicle to travel to remote sites for troubleshooting and repair work
