Crew Leader - Underground (Union Power)

About the role

The Underground Crew Leader position is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This role requires a combination of technical expertise and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized underground work.
  • Supervise crew members and lead them in safe and productive work procedures.
  • Troubleshoot problems on underground circuits and identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
  • Identify and locate puller and tensioner setups, and understand how to safely operate equipment.
  • Understand and apply grounding procedures, and test and classify soil.
  • Plan safe work based on a job print or work order, and understand sloping and shoring requirements.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor, and properly install and remove Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Comply with company reporting procedures and complete required paperwork.
  • Coordinate and inspect the work of crew members, and properly ask for and take line clearances.
  • Understand line protection devices and properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Willing to work over-time when requested, and work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

Requirements

  • Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
  • Understand flag and tag procedures.
  • Possess a CDL and demonstrate safe driving.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Must be familiar with induced voltage and understand how to obtain a one shot on a reclosure.
  • Must be familiar with ladder requirements and understand how to safely operate equipment.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of tools for terminating cable, and understand how to phase out a line using phasing sticks.
  • Must be willing to work over-time when requested, and work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

  • Customer-oriented and able to follow company safety rules and all other company policies.

Skills

  • Working knowledge of leadership and management skills.
  • Knowledge of tools for terminating cable.
