Credit Underwriter

About the role
The Credit Underwriter is responsible for underwriting new or existing loans in a portfolio primarily consisting of commercial real estate (CRE), commercial and industrial lines of credit, term facilities, multifamily and mixed-use loans, nonprofit loans, and loans to houses of worship. The Underwriter will contribute to the Bank’s loan growth by assessing credit risk, evaluating current credit quality, assigning proper risk ratings, and participating in client meetings or calls with the lending team.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate strong underwriting skills and the ability to understand and communicate credit issues.
- Independently assess complex credit issues and analyze risk.
- Analyze financial statements and review overall credit quality.
- Review financial statements, tax returns, rent rolls, and cash flow projections.
- Underwrite loan extensions and renewal requests as needed.
- Conduct site visits as necessary and prepare site visit reports for loans in the portfolio in accordance with lending procedures.
- Assist with the annual review of existing loans as needed.
Requirements
- Ability to underwrite and monitor commercial and industrial loans, lines of credit, term facilities, owner-occupied mortgages, multifamily and mixed-use loans, small business loans, nonprofit loans, and loans to houses of worship.
- In-depth knowledge of credit quality and credit analysis.
- Proficiency in analyzing financial statements of commercial real estate, multifamily properties, and business operations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with experience in relationship management and business development.
- Ability to interact with borrowers, attorneys, accountants, appraisers, and other external professionals.
- Familiarity with federal, state, and local government funding sources for capital and operating needs of multifamily housing and commercial real estate.
Qualifications
- College degree with an equivalent of 5+ years of experience in underwriting and analyzing commercial real estate and business loans.
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
- Knowledge of bank products and services.
