About the Role

The Credit Officer plays a key role in managing credit risk by conducting thorough analyses of loan requests and providing well-informed recommendations. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining credit policies, ensuring loan approvals align with the risk appetite established by senior management, identifying deviations from credit guidelines, ensuring regulatory compliance, and performing regular portfolio reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review Flagstar Approval Memos, loan modifications, and portfolio reviews in collaboration with Relationship Managers, utilizing in-depth credit analysis, industry, and company research to recommend appropriate credit structures while ensuring compliance with internal and external policies.
  • Review, approve, or decline credit requests; escalate recommendations to higher approval authorities as appropriate.
  • Serve as a voting member on credit committees for loan approvals.
  • Monitor credit portfolios and lead credit risk review activities to ensure ongoing risk management and compliance with performance standards.
  • Assist in the development of loan-level strategies and oversee asset management reporting efforts.
  • Contribute to identifying portfolio trends and support the development of strategies for effective portfolio management.
  • Actively participate in weekly deal screening meetings to evaluate new opportunities and ensure alignment with credit risk appetite.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, complete required compliance training, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of Flagstar’s internal policies and evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Foster collaboration with lines of business to develop and refine credit policies and procedures.
  • Attend client meetings and conduct on-site project visits as needed to better understand borrower operations and project conditions.
  • Contribute to the development and monitoring of key risk indicators for the Bank.
  • Perform regular reviews of departmental reports to track portfolio performance and identify emerging risks.
  • Lead or contribute to special projects as assigned by management.
  • Collaborate with peer managers to share best practices, drive consistency, and enhance overall team performance.
  • Continuously improve templates, analytical tools, and procedures to enhance the credit analysis process.
  • Use independent judgment and discretion to make decisions, analyze, and resolve problems.
  • Perform special projects and additional duties as required.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate Degree (4 years or equivalent) in Business, Finance, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in credit/lending.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree (or Postgraduate equivalent) in Business, Finance, or related field.

Skills

  • Ability to analyze complex financial data and draw sound conclusions regarding creditworthiness.
  • Skilled in making timely and well-informed credit decisions, often under pressure.
  • High level of accuracy in reviewing financials, legal documents, and credit reports.
  • Clear, concise communication of credit recommendations, risk factors, and policy exceptions to stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively with relationship managers, clients, and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to identify problems proactively and develop practical, risk-conscious solutions.
  • Proficiency with credit scoring models, Microsoft Excel, financial modeling tools, and risk management software (e.g., Moody’s RiskCalc, S&P Capital IQ).
  • Strong ability to build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders by communicating clearly and engaging in proactive collaboration.
  • Aligns relationship-building efforts with enterprise goals to accelerate performance and drive strategic results.
  • Builds trusted client relationships by identifying needs and delivering tailored solutions to enhance the overall client experience.

Pay

Pay Range: $102,262.50 - $185,638.00
